Data centres already have batteries — lots of them.
UPS batteries are installed in virtually every data centre for one purpose: to keep critical systems running when mains power fails. They sit fully charged, ready for that moment — which, most of the time, never comes.
That raises a question worth exploring. Could future grid-interactive systems safely use some of that spare capacity — reducing peak electricity demand, storing renewable energy, and supporting the grid — while keeping a protected emergency reserve always available?
The engineering is not simple, and the resilience function must always take priority. But the principle is straightforward: the battery is already there. The full article looks at how modern architectures might change that calculation for data centre operators.
