British manufacturing capacity is back in the national conversation. Why does keeping the ability to make things here matter?

The UK Government’s decision to bring British Steel into public ownership has renewed focus on domestic industry, skilled employment and secure UK supply chains.

For us, the wider point goes far beyond steel. Manufacturing strength depends on retaining the people, machinery, knowledge and infrastructure needed to respond when markets change, or disruption arrives.

Strong UK manufacturing capacity supports:

Plastic input costs have faced significant pressure... But good material decisions are about more than price per kilo.

Recent UK producer price data showed renewed pressure on plastics in May, adding another layer of uncertainty for manufacturers and purchasing teams.

For businesses developing or sourcing injection-moulded products, the instinct may be to focus immediately on the lowest material cost. But the cheapest material on paper is not always the lowest-cost choice.

A material still needs to suit the job and balance:
1. How reliably it can be moulded
2. The strength, durability and finish the application requires
3. Availability and supply-chain resilience
4. Opportunities to reduce material use or introduce recycled content
5. The true cost of production, rejects, replacement and product failure

At Flambeau Europe, material selection is part of the wider manufacturing conversation, and not just a decision made in isolation.

Our teams work with customers to understand the application, review the design and assess the practical trade-offs between different polymers, grades and processing requirements. That can include value engineering to improve manufacturability, reduce unnecessary material use or identify an alternative that delivers the required performance more efficiently.

The goal is to make an evidence-led choice that protects quality, production consistency and long-term value.

Encouragingly, figures released last week showed UK raw-material costs falling month on month for the first time since January. This offers some tentative relief, although continuing energy-market volatility means manufacturers still need to plan carefully.

💡 The best time to solve an injection moulding problem is before the tool is cut.

Design for manufacture is about making sure a component does not just look right on screen, but can also be moulded consistently, efficiently and reliably for years to come.

Small decisions made early can have a major effect later, and getting these details right can help reduce warpage, sink, rejects, unnecessary tool changes and production delays.

26 years of Flambeau Europe.

This year marks 26 years of Flambeau Europe manufacturing in the UK — a milestone built on far more than a date alone.

Behind it sits a much longer story: nearly 80 years of manufacturing heritage from Flambeau in the US, and decades of experience here in the UK even before the business formally emerged under the Flambeau family.

We think that matters.

Because longevity in manufacturing is not just about how long a name has existed. It is about the experience, resilience and continuous improvement built up over time, and the confidence that gives customers in the present day.

From our base in Ramsgate, that history continues to support what we do now: UK manufacturing with the backing of deep-rooted expertise, long-term thinking, and a commitment to keep moving forward.
