We read today that "FUN" is cited as one of the Top drivers of engagement at 77% of companies, surveyed by Great Place to Work UK.
Although unsurprising to us, it's not quite that simple though in reality is it?π
If you Google "how to make work more fun?" there are whole pages and articles dedicated to the answer, with some legitimate suggestions like;
βοΈ Start every meeting with a little fun
Or
βοΈ Host a Murder Mystery
Or
βοΈ Enjoy daily brain teasers
Unless...
βοΈ It's a meeting which legit could have been an email and also - your an introvert
Or
βοΈ There are so many frustrations, tensions and long hours that you already spend more time than you would like with these people
Or
βοΈ Your manager is so difficult to communicate with, that each and every task is already like a test in itself.
So, alittle like how fruit in the canteen does not equal a wellbeing strategy, throwing a few FUN activities into the mix does not a "FUN workplace" make!
In fact, if the basics of culture, respect, behaviour, systems and processes are not where they should be, other sticky π©Ή initiatives often only cause more disengagement - "Do they really think that's gonna make me happy, how about dealing with the slackers in our team" and more frustration - "Great, so I have to go to this "fun" thing and then stay late to catch up on all the work missed".
FUN is fantastic, we β€οΈ fun and we β€οΈ to encourage People Centred Workplaces, just alittle reminder not to forget that sometimes - it's the small things which make a difference.
ENGAGE with your teams, find out what they need, to get true value and return on your efforts.
& Always ensure you fix the cracks before trying to fill up the bucket by adding more water π§
Then, by all means let's crank up the fun!!! π
