Early Globular Pot by Hans Coper
As the piece slowly turns, the depth and complexity of Hans Coper’s surface treatment comes fully into view, layered porcelain slips and engobes over a manganese ground, delicately interrupted by incised linear markings that catch the light from every angle.
Created circa 1954, this early piece captures the balance of form, rhythm, and restraint that established Coper as one of the most important figures in post war studio pottery. Both sculptural and functional, the work demonstrates the artist’s extraordinary sensitivity to proportion and surface.
Previously in the collection of Jane Coper and exhibited in several major museum exhibitions dedicated to Lucie Rie and Hans Coper, the piece achieved £35,000 against an estimate of £20,000-£30,000 in our May 2026 auction, Contemporary Ceramics + Craft.
