Ever wondered why Longwater Lake looks a little different lately? 💚

With the long stretch of high temperatures we’ve had, the lake has taken on a distinctly green appearance. It might look unusual, but it’s actually a completely natural response to warm, sunny weather.

🌿 The green colour is caused primarily by an increase in algae, as well as microscopic organisms called cyanobacteria which can cause streak-like green marks in the water. These organisms use sunlight as an energy source to grow, and this growth is boosted when warm, settled water contains specific nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus.

🌊 This can result in an algal bloom, where the algae become more concentrated nearer the surface, making the water appear green and cloudy.

🐟 While algae and cyanobacteria are a natural part of the lake’s ecosystem, providing food and oxygen to aquatic organisms and forming an essential part of the food chain, particularly dense algal blooms can negatively affect the water quality and reduce oxygen levels as algae die and decompose.

As temperatures drop, sunlight becomes less intense and water movement increases, conditions generally become less favourable for rapid algal growth. This can allow algae to decline towards lower levels. Rainfall can sometimes slow that process by washing in extra nutrients, so it may take a little while to see a visible change.

Longwater Lake is home to a huge range of wildlife, so our Biodiversity Coordinator team and the experts at Ground Control will be keeping a close eye on things over the coming weeks 👀

Thank you to everyone who joined our recent Environmental Forum with Grundon 🌍 It was brilliant to see so much energy in the room around improving how we manage waste across the park.

Swipe for clear signage from Grundon outlining what materials should be placed in each bin. We’ve also pulled together some useful resources on where your waste actually goes once it leaves site, including videos on how general waste is turned into energy.

Behind the scenes, Green Park is working hard to stay wild.🌿

You might not clock it on your lunchtime walk, but there’s a lot going on beneath the surface (and above it) to protect the nature we share this park with. The team has been busy getting everything ready to renew our Biodiversity Benchmark accreditation, with the audit taking place later this month. Surveys covering bat and bird boxes, reedbeds, wildflower meadows, breeding birds and invasive plants are all complete, with a few more, including bat activity and badger monitoring, still under way.

And the wildlife has been showing up in a big way this summer, swipe to see for yourself:
🦇 Soprano pipistrelle bats recorded on site
🐦 Little egrets and grey herons spotted around Longwater Lake
🐞 A seven spot ladybird making the most of the common knapweed
🐦 A pair of long tailed t**s foraging above the wildflower meadow
🌱 Self heal thriving within our grassland
🐣 One of our young geese, a few months old and finding its feet by the lake

We’ve also had camera traps out tracking badger activity across the park, and we’re busy testing live-stream wildlife cameras behind the scenes so that our occupiers will be able to log on and enjoy the live action for themselves.

Thank you to Izzy Campolucci for hosting a brilliant nature walk and talk this month, it’s this kind of engagement that keeps Green Park’s ecology thriving.

Keep your eyes open on your next walk around the park, you never know what you’ll spot. 💚
