A roof that only covers a third of a care home's electricity use doesn't sound like a strong solar case. St Joseph's Care Home proves that wrong.

The 67.34kWp system covers about 32% of the home's £47,850 annual electricity bill, but a care home runs continuously: kitchens, laundry, heating and nurse call never stop. That constant demand turned a partial roof into £16,123 of savings and export income in year one, on a five year payback. 💰

Your system is on. Your paperwork isn't ☀️

3 things have to happen in the first month after commissioning, and only one of them is your installer's job.
🔹Your MCS certificate has to be raised within 30 calendar days of commissioning. Without it, no supplier will pay you for export.
🔹Your DNO approval is worth reading rather than filing. Your export limit is written on it.
🔹The export tariff can only be applied for by the person who holds the energy account. Your installer cannot do it for you.

Not every unit you export is worth the same amount 💰

On a flat export rate, timing changes nothing: a unit sold at midday earns exactly what a unit sold in the evening earns. On a time-of-use export rate it is not flat, and the same kilowatt hour is worth different amounts at different points in the day. That is the whole reason it is worth knowing your rate table rather than the single headline number on the tariff.

Once you know when your rate is highest, the decisions get simple. Shift what you can into the cheaper windows, hold the rest in the battery rather than sending it out at the low rate, and export into the best paying window. And whatever your export rate does, a unit you use yourself avoids the full import price, which is usually worth more than selling it.

Chasing bifacial panels for a tiled pitched roof? The back of the panel is barely seeing any light ☀️

On a standard tiled roof the panel sits close to the tiles, so very little reflected light reaches the rear. Bifacial generation does not come into play the way it might on a flat roof or a ground mount. What matters here is generation per square metre.

That is where back-contact technology does well. The electrical connectors sit on the back of the panel rather than the front, so more of the surface goes to photovoltaic cells instead of wiring, and you get more power from the same patch of roof. On a tiled pitched roof, the highest-efficiency panel is almost always the right choice.

A cold store is the one commercial building where almost nothing you generate leaves the site 📈

Compressors cycle through the night, through weekends and through the Christmas shutdown, because product temperature does not observe opening hours. That flat load is why cold storage suits solar so well: a unit used on site avoids the full import price, while a unit exported earns materially less. Self-consumption, not roof orientation or panel efficiency, is what drives commercial returns.

Spirit Energy's 695 kWp installation at Philip Dennis Foodservice in Oxfordshire is projected to save over £85,000 a year, on a five year payback with an IRR above 23%.

Every solar and battery system comes down to three parts: the panels, the battery and the inverter. Everything else is cabling and optional extras ☀️

The battery is where people get caught out. Capacity, in kilowatt hours, is how much it holds. Power, in kilowatts, is how fast it charges and discharges. Think of a water tank: the kilowatt hours are the size of the tank, the kilowatts are the width of the pipe.

And before any of it gets sized, there is a question worth answering honestly. Are you after the best financial return, or as much self-sufficiency as you can get? The two pull in different directions, and the answer changes the design, the cost and how the system ends up on your property.

Most installers will only ever quote you ONE size of solar panel… and it might be costing you serious power. ⚡️

Standard panels (~1.8m x 1.1m) are the default go-to, but Jumbo panels (~2.4m x 1.1m) aren’t just for commercial warehouses anymore.

If you have a wide, open roof space, the difference is massive:
🔹 7 Standard panels = ~3.29 kWp
🔹 7 Jumbo panels = ~4.38 kWp
That’s over 30% more energy generation from the exact same roof layout! 🔋

It’s all about maximum generation per square metre. Don't just settle for standard sizing—ask your installer what fits your space best.

Three roof angles. One solar system.📈

Ashlyns Care Home's roof splits across a courtyard, facing three different directions rather than one. A single-string system would have meant designing around the worst angle, so we ran three separate arrays instead, at 15°, 75° and 105° from south, each tracked independently by two Solis 50kW inverters. The largest array alone is expected to produce more than half the site's total output.

Total system size: 116.03 kWp across 255 panels, with no battery on this one. Projected output: 99,845 kWh a year, an estimated £18,898 saved in year one, a 6 year payback and 19% IRR, which lands right inside the range we've delivered across our wider B&M Care Homes portfolio.

Does solar actually add value when you sell your home? ☀️

Some say a solar system's only worth what a buyer is willing to pay for it. But think of it like a business asset: buyers price a business on its future profits, and they can price a solar system the same way, based on the electricity savings it'll keep generating.

In one real case, a system installed back in 2010 helped sell the property because buyers could see exactly that. They weren't just buying a house, they were buying years of lower electricity bills built in. The same idea applies to commercial buildings too, where solar can add long term financial value and potentially extra appeal for buyers.
