🍾🗑 Waste Wednesday Fact 🗑️🥂

Glass is one of the most sustainable materials when it’s recycled correctly. ♻
Unlike many other materials, it can be recycled over and over again without losing quality or purity - meaning a bottle today could become a bottle again tomorrow.

However, not all glass placed in recycling actually makes it through the process. Contamination from ceramics, mirrors, or non-recyclable glass can cause entire batches to be rejected. ⛔️

When recycled properly, glass saves energy, reduces raw material extraction, and supports a more circular economy.

To help improve glass recycling:
🍷 Only recycle bottles and jars (not ceramics or Pyrex-style glass)
🧽 Clean the glass to ensure it is free from food or liquid
🚮 Separate colours where required
♻️ Use designated glass recycling points if available
🚫 Avoid mixing with general waste

Small habits make a big difference in keeping glass in circulation.

📱🗑 Waste Wednesday Fact 🗑♻️🔌

Old phones, broken chargers, unused laptops - electronic waste is one of the fastest-growing waste streams in the world.

Each year, over 50 million tonnes of e-waste is generated globally, making it a major environmental challenge. ⚠️ This includes everything from small household gadgets to large appliances. A significant amount still ends up in landfill, despite containing valuable materials like copper, gold, and rare earth metals, that could otherwise be recovered and reused.

When e-waste is not disposed of correctly, it can also release harmful substances into the environment, making responsible recycling even more important. ⚡

To help reduce your e-waste impact:
📱 Keep devices for as long as they still function well
🔋 Repair or replace parts instead of replacing whole items
♻️ Use certified e-waste recycling points (🙋‍♂️) or collection services
🔌 Remove batteries and accessories where required before disposal
💻 Sell, donate or refurbish working electronics where possible

Small steps with electronics can go a long way in reducing waste and recovering valuable resources. 🌎

This is a really important reminder about what can happen when batteries, vapes and other electrical items are thrown into general waste or recycling bins. 🔋🔥

As a waste transfer station, we see first-hand why getting waste streams right matters. Batteries, vapes and other electrical items can pose a serious fire risk when they end up where they shouldn’t - just as this incident shows.

At 1st Choice, we accept WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment), helping to ensure electrical items are handled through the appropriate waste stream. ✅

Whether you’re a business or a household with electrical equipment, batteries or other electrical items that need disposing of, bring them to us for safe and appropriate disposal.

🛞🗑 WASTE WEDNESDAY FACT 🗑🛞

Tyres are designed to be durable, but that durability also makes them difficult to dispose of responsibly once they reach the end of their life.

Globally, over 1 billion tyres become waste each year - with 50 million of those being in the UK alone.

If not properly managed, they can take up significant space in landfill and pose environmental risks due to their long-lasting materials.

However, end-of-life tyres can often be repurposed or recycled into new products. When recycled correctly, they can be transformed into valuable new products, including sports surfaces, playground flooring, equestrian surfaces, rubber matting and even materials used in road construction.

To help manage tyre waste responsibly:
♻️ Use licensed tyre disposal or recycling services (such as 1st Choice 😉)
🚫 Never fly-tip or burn tyres
🔄 Consider retreading where appropriate
🏗 Support recycling into new materials where possible
📍 Use authorised waste facilities only 👋

Disposing of responsibly ensures tyres don’t become a long-term environmental issue. 🌍

Are you a business looking to save money on your waste disposal? 💼🗑

One of the simplest ways to reduce your waste costs (besides bringing it the 1st Choice 😉 ) is by segregating your waste correctly.

By separating materials such as cardboard, plastics, metals, wood and general waste, each waste stream can be managed and billed appropriately. This not only helps to keep disposal costs down, but also ensures more recyclable materials are recovered instead of being sent to landfill. ♻

A well-managed waste strategy can help your business:
✅ Reduce waste disposal costs
♻️ Improve recycling rates
📋 Stay compliant with waste regulations
🌍 Reduce your environmental impact
