As a mother to a young man, the issue of men’s mental health weighs heavily on my heart, especially today, on World Su***de Prevention Day. Society often teaches boys that showing emotion is a weakness, that "real men" don’t cry, and that vulnerability is something to be hidden. These harmful stereotypes are costing lives.

Far too many young men, like my son, grow up believing they have to face their struggles in silence. But the truth is, asking for help doesn’t make you weak, it makes you human. I’ve seen firsthand how the pressure to "man up" can push men into isolation, even when they need support the most.

That’s why we’ve been fundraising at Walters House, a boys day house at Bromsgrove School for Andys Man Club, a charity doing life-saving work across the UK. ANDYSMANCLUB offers free-to-attend peer support groups, both in-person and online, to help men talk about their feelings without fear of judgement. Their mission is simple but profound: to end the stigma surrounding men’s mental health and support men through the power of conversation.

For the men reading this: You are not alone. Whether it’s through ANDYSMANCLUB or another support network, there are people who will listen, people who understand. It’s okay to open up, and it’s okay to seek help.

As a mother, my greatest wish is for my son, and all men, to know that being strong doesn’t mean staying silent. True strength is found in vulnerability, in speaking up when you’re struggling, and in leaning on others for support.

Let’s change the narrative, break the silence, and make sure our sons, brothers, husbands, and friends know it’s okay to talk. We need to create a world where no man feels alone in his battle.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please visit ANDYSMANCLUB to find support.

Greetings and the brightest of Beltane blessings to you!

Beltane is a Fire Festival. The word 'Beltane' originates from the Celtic God 'Bel', meaning 'the bright one' and the Gaelic word 'teine' meaning fire. Together they make 'Bright Fire', or 'Goodly Fire' and traditionally bonfires were lit to honour the Sun and encourage the support of Bel and the Sun's light to nurture the emerging future harvest and protect the community. Bel had to be won over through human effort. Traditionally all fires in the community were put out and a special fire was kindled for Beltane. "This was the Tein-eigen, the need fire. People jumped the fire to purify, cleanse and to bring fertility. Couples jumped the fire together to pledge themselves to each other. Cattle and other animals were driven through the smoke as a protection from disease and to bring fertility. At the end of the evening, the villagers would take some of the Teineigen to start their fires anew."
