To say that computing has changed a lot since we started is an understatement. Almost every aspect of software has changed since the first locally hosted DOS based applications I created back in 1987!

The move to windows, and a mouse, introduced significant user interfaces changes. But that was nothing compared to the changes brought about by the internet. Not only did it completely change the way the user interface interacted with the underlying database, it also made a big difference to users views on what software was and how it was to be used. Trust in the cloud needed to be earned as S.A.A.S. applications become commonplace.

There has however been one thing that has remained relatively constant throughout, a good backend database design. Often something given very little consideration by the user, the quality and suitability of the database structure can have a massive impact on the end product.

It is with that in mind, that the name Data Simplexity was born. The database structure is the first thing we work on when developing a new system, and creating a simple data structure able to cater for all of the complexities of a clients needs is essential.

It is something we all do, sometimes hundreds of times a day. But what is happening behind the scenes when you click on a link or hit enter on a web address?

The browser checks the web address to make sure it's valid.

It then contacts one of many servers dedicated to providing the IP Address for the specified web address.

Once it has the IP address, it connects to the correct web server passing it the page request.

When the server receives the request, it processes it, determines if the requested resource exists and if the user has permission to access it.

The server will then construct the data to be sent back to the user.This will often mean gathering data from multiple records in a database.

Once the browser receives the data, it starts rendering it on the screen for the user.

During the rendering process, it might find a number of other resources are required such as images or additional code. This may then result in further requests back to the original server, or often to a second or third server.

With a good web connection and a properly configured web server, all of this will happen within a fraction of a second.

Your company image can often depend on a snappy and properly serviced website. Don’t leave it to chance!

''As a company with over 10,000 customers relying solely on traditional paper filing systems we approached Data Simplexity 3-4 years ago with an idea of a database template that we could use to contact/market groups of customers with various mailshot offers and promotions at different times during the year.

The database would also be regularly used by team members to refer to during customer telephone conversations when booking a service engineer, or dealing with customer queries etc.

With Mercedes-Benz announcing that they have begun the roll out of ChatGPT voice commands in their cars, is there any area of our life that won’t be impacted in some way by the wave of AI related tools that are sweeping through society?

The truth is that AI has been a thing for over 70 years now, and has been a generally hidden, but significant, element in all kinds of computer software for the last 30+ years. So, what has changed in the last year that has moved it so far into the main stream?

In short, two things, computing power and “Large Language Models”.
AI takes a lot of computing power to work effectively. Cloud hosting and distributed computing has made that accessible to anyone who wants it.
Large Language Models, or LLMs, are essentially databases of billions of examples of general speech optimised for AI use.
These LLMs have essentially bridged the gap between embedded AI systems and human interactions allowing AI to properly understand what is being asked of them.

The upshot of all of this is that if you are a technology or creative company of any sort then you should, at very least, be keeping an eye on what is happening to see if there is any way you might be able to use or integrate AI into your day to day products and services. Failure to jump onto this bandwagon, might just leave you a long way behind your competitors!

I have recently had the misfortune to work with a number of suppliers who have provided a less than satisfactory service.
It might be a naive view, but I have always expected that companies, and individuals, would strive to provide a good service first and put making money in second place. Recent dealings have made me see that their priorities can all too often be the other way round!
