One thing we are passionate about is building and educating community on the importance of accessibility and care for disabled and neurodivergent members of our society. That’s exactly what we do with our Oliver McGowan Training. We had another fantastic Tier 2 training day last week, this time in Basingstoke, led by our senior Learning Disability Expert Hugo Boss Patteson-Knight .

Image description: A wide photo of a carpeted conference room with wood panelled walls and a white ceiling. About 25 people of different ages are seated around three round tables covered in white cloths, with water bottles, glasses and mugs on top. Everyone is turned towards the camera, most of them smiling. In the front of the frame, Hugo - a man with short dark hair and a beard, wearing a cream short sleeved pinstripe shirt, black trousers and black trainers, sits in a manual wheelchair with his hands clasped, smiling.

At the bottom of the screen captions appear:

"Can you read this? What about this? Hopefully much easier, how about… So that's not so bad. But what about. Now? In that bright, bright light, it's a lot harder to read. that was an example of how color contrast can impact readability and also how situational changes can impact readability. And this is a huge part of accessibility why it is for everybody. Now think about the last social media post that you made. How was the color contrast? How would your brand colors work together? Uh, is it visible in bright sunlight? Can people who are deaf or hard of hearing read the captions? Think about the 1 in 12 men who are colorblind and don't lose your audience to inaccessibility".

We all have different brains - there is no wrong or right. An accessible world means that anyone can access it - regardless of the way their brain works.

Heike, a white man with brown hair and a brown beard stands in front of a screen giving a presentation. He is wearing a grey suit jacket, with a grey sweater underneath. He has a lapel around his neck and is using his hands (one of which holds a remote) to gesture. There is a black box with white text in the lower third of the video frame. It says "POV: we all have a different brain". Heike says:
"Of everybody here we have all a different brain. However, if you then have a look, you have neurotypical, neurodivergent. Neurodivergent just means a difference from the standard"

There are so many ways to think about reaching an audience. Being “audience first” means considering that some people cannot easily hear, see or navigate your content.

Considering things like;
-video and image descriptions
-colour contrast
-large enough text for captions
-easy to read fonts
-clear language
-and a straight forward website…
could make all the difference!

Caitlin will share more insights into what accessibility can look like for businesses during her weekly Office Hours live on LinkedIn every Tuesday morning at 10am.

Caitlin Quinn, a white woman with dark curly hair stands in front of a screen, giving a presentation. She is wearing a black and white striped top and has a lapel around her neck. She is wearing glasses .Caitlin uses her hands to gesture while she is talking. She says;

"If someone can't see your image. If someone can't hear your video. If someone can't navigate your website. Or read your caption. You haven't reached them. You are not audience first for them."

These captions appear at the bottom of the video.

At the end of the video, the screen changes to a coral pink background with the Good Access logo in blue, orange and black on it. Underneath is written "Driving success through accessibility."

Did you know that the colour contrast in your branding can be a huge barrier for people who might otherwise engage with your brand?

Video description:
Caitlin Quinn, a white woman with dark curly hair stands in front of a screen, giving a presentation. She is wearing a grey vest over a green shirt and glasses. In the middle of the screen there is a white box with black writing that says:
"Did you know that 1 in 12 men are colour blind and might not see your branding?"

Caitlin uses her hands to gesture while she is talking. She says;

"So you should know what of your brand. Colours can be used together to meet accessibility requirements to meet contrast specs. That's something that can just be built in. So you always know this colour works with this colour. Perfect."
