One December, I sat on the floor of my bathroom on Christmas Day and sobbed.

Not because anything terrible had happened.
Because everything had happened.

My kids were overwhelmed.
The house was loud.

Plans kept changing.
The extended family had their opinions.

The wrapping paper was too much, the noise was too much, the pressure was too much -
and suddenly it was all too much.

I remember whispering to myself,
“Why can’t I hold it together? Why is this so hard?”

I didn’t know any better at the time,

I told myself it was my fault.
I told myself that other parents were coping.
I told myself my kids were just “too sensitive.”
I told myself I should just try harder, stay calmer, be better.

What I know now:

It wasn’t me.
It wasn’t my children.
It was our nervous systems.

December is a sensory assault disguised as “magic.”
Lights. Noise. Routines all over the place.
Social pressure. Family expectations.
Everyone is slightly more tense than usual.

And when we already feel things deeply?
Our nervous systems go into overload.

Most of us have gears we never use - not because we can’t, but because no one taught us how.

Children are the same.

They’re not underperforming.
They’re under-supported.

When a child is stressed, overstimulated or emotionally overloaded, they’re stuck in first gear — no matter how much adults tell them to “focus.”

Switch the environment → you switch the gear.

Build safety → you unlock potential.

Teach emotional regulation → you get more cooperation, confidence and capacity.
