Morning everyone I’ve had a busy time being very focussed on one client - it’s a diverse project where I’ve been involved in a number of areas like performance management of staff, physical project management of a build, sales/ team communication. We’ve turned a corner I’m pleased to say. During this time my father died and we held his funeral last week. He was the most resilient, kind and positive person I ever knew, and taught me so much. Many of the people who worked for him remained friends his whole life. Yes I know things have changed in the workplace over the decades but understanding how people tick is vital to stability and performance. With all the financial threats to small businesses rising it’s even more important that the leader’s focus remains on keeping the ship moving forward. If you’re struggling in business and need a mentor to get your thoughts straight and a strategy for personal/ business growth, or an appraisal of your figures do get in touch. Asking for help is a strength.

This is Keith, he made my visit to B&Q nursling palatable yesterday. It is usually my least favourite place and what’s worse the sun was shining! But paint had to be bought so in I plunged. Keith was calm, pleasant, knowledgeable and caring. He even set me up for a small discount so I saved 5%. Thank you Keith, on the paint counter, you brought my blood pressure down! Great customer service deserves recognition

I’m reflecting on failure today. Everyone gets it wrong sometimes and isn’t always the best version of themselves. In business I always work by the principle that treat others as you’d expect to be treated yourself. Be prepared when things go wrong, to negotiate and see the other side’s position. Contracts only work when both parties reasonably want them to. The only place to challenge a contract is in Court if negotiation fails, and if the procedural inconsistencies don’t get you, you need to remember that the court’s decision is based on your ability to put forward evidence that has legal validity in the eyes of the judge, so unless you have legal representation ( at your cost) or expert evidence ( at your cost) the chances of winning against someone who is a specialist are slim. What have I learnt? Judges are impressive in the way they assimilate information, but don’t make any assumptions on how they will view your evidence. I can sum up my experience in the words of Billy Bragg ‘this isn’t a court of justice son, its a court of law’. In areas where there’s two distinct skillsets don’t assume one person can have adequate expertise in both- in my view it would be a bit like asking a dentist to operate on your rectum….same alimentary canal but entirely different ends 😂. Ultimately there’s a lot of trust involved in using anyone in a specialist field, so take your time before jumping in to the relationship. I have loads of experience in many aspects of life but not Court ( until now) and its not an experience I’d want to repeat. However- failure and learning from it is vital in business, and my clients will benefit from my new experience!

I’ve had some interesting comments from clients and potential clients recently, I’d like to focus on this one
‘I’ll be in touch when I next have a crisis , I’m fine again at the minute.’
If this sounds familiar, ask yourself
- did I get to the bottom of why the crisis happened?
- how much stress did I suffer at the time?
- how much headspace did I have when dealing with the crisis?
- did I make any changes which will prevent it next time?
I think you know where this is going, don’t wait for a crisis before you reach out to a business coach or consultant. You can only deal with issues and find the space to make rational decisions about change when things are calm. Don’t wait. Contact me now, for just £115 I can give you some valuable advice with my business health check. Meanwhile I’m on holiday ! Cheers 🙃

How much time do you invest in your business? I am going to be honest, I don’t always take my own advice! For example this week I’ve been advising a startup business on content and their ‘story’ and realised I’ve not posted myself for a few weeks. Time is a commodity that isn’t endless, but if you’re not as busy as you’d like use it wisely to write your story and about topics that your potential customers may not know. You don’t have to be a professional marketeer in fact the honest, open, less sophisticated approach is more appealing. Yes run it through AI if you must ( I tend not to!) but don’t lose ‘you’ and your words. If you need help ask, it’s a strength, but ‘just do it’ what’s the worst that can happen? Believe in yourself and so will others. Here’s me at a recent event …..

When I start with a new client there’s always a lot of information to gather. That can be a surprise but it’s because often a business owner has rushed or missed vital aspects of their ‘brand’ and so has spent money on avenues that show no ROI ( return on investment) . The benefit of a fresh pair of eyes means we pause, collate and make a strategy. Do you have a strategy with stepping stones in place, or do you feel like a hamster in a wheel? Why not contact me for a business health check, just £115 and I’ll review your business issues and give you at least 3 pointers to focus on. If you choose me to get more involved I’ll discount any onward support by the £115. With the beautiful, tiny, but incredibly resilient snowdrops coming through why not get your head above the soil?
