🦇 We’re going to the National Bat Conference!

ArbBat has booked places at this year’s National Bat Conference with the Bat Conservation Trust and we’re looking forward to getting involved.

It’s a great opportunity to hear about the latest bat research, learn from scientists and researchers, and keep up to date with developments in bat ecology and conservation.

We’re always keen to develop our knowledge and bring the latest science into our work in the field. 🌿

🌳🦇 Up the trees!

This week we’ve completed our second set of surveys climbing PRF trees and using an endoscope to inspect potential roost features for bats.

Getting up close allows us to assess cavities and other features that may provide important bat roosting habitat.

🦇 This week we carried out a bat emergence survey on a mature tree as part of a proposed development.

Trees aren't just an important landscape feature, they can also provide roosting habitat for bats. Cavities, cracks, loose bark and other natural features all have the potential to support these protected species.

By carrying out bat emergence surveys before development, we can determine whether bats are using a tree and provide the information needed to support the planning process and ensure protected species are appropriately considered.

🌳 Another busy week for ArbBat Consultancy Ltd!

This week we've been out completing an Arboricultural Impact Assessment (AIA) and a Tree Safety Survey.

An Arboricultural Impact Assessment helps identify how a proposed development may affect existing trees and recommends measures to protect them where possible.

A Tree Safety Survey assesses the condition of trees, identifying defects and helping landowners manage potential risks before they become a problem.

Whether you're planning a development or looking to better understand the condition of your trees, we're here to help.

Get in touch if you'd like to discuss your project!

Species Spotlight: Himalayan balsam 🌿

Himalayan balsam (Impatiens glandulifera) is one of the UK's most widespread invasive non-native plant species. Originally introduced as an ornamental garden plant, it has spread rapidly along rivers, streams and other damp habitats.

While its pink flowers are attractive and provide a nectar source for pollinators, Himalayan balsam can outcompete native vegetation by forming dense stands. When the plant dies back each winter, it can leave riverbanks exposed and more vulnerable to erosion.

The plant is easily recognised by its tall stems, pink helmet-shaped flowers, and distinctive explosive seed pods, which can disperse seeds several metres from the parent plant.

Early identification and appropriate management are key to limiting its spread and protecting native habitats. ArbBat Consultancy Ltd can assist in assessment, maintenance and management plans.

Have you spotted Himalayan balsam while out and about this summer?

One of the things we enjoy most about bat survey season is the opportunity to slow down and experience the landscape as it changes from day to night.

This week's survey took place at a peaceful, dog-friendly site, providing the perfect setting to observe bat activity while taking in the evening surroundings.

Although the focus is always on collecting robust survey data, evenings like these are a reminder of why field ecology is such a rewarding profession. 🦇

Ginkgo has been busy this week 🐾🌿

Here she is at scentwork training, putting her nose to work and continuing her journey as a trainee ecology detection dog.

It's safe to say she takes this part of the job very seriously... especially if treats are involved!

We're incredibly proud of her progress and can't wait to see where her training takes her next.

Another busy few weeks out on site for us 🌿

Since we last checked in, we’ve:
✔ Set up hazel dormouse tubes
✔ Completed our first two bat emergence surveys of the season
✔ Carried out an ECoW nesting bird check

Our latest bat emergence survey was a great one, with recordings of three Annex II species:
🦇 Greater horseshoe bat
🦇 Lesser horseshoe bat
🦇 Barbastelle bat

Survey season is now in full swing and it’s great to be involved in a variety of ecological work across different sites.

Looking forward to more fieldwork over the coming weeks!
