400+ times a year, someone is found in or around a waste container before it’s emptied.

That’s not just a statistic.

It’s a reminder that people sleeping rough may seek shelter in commercial bins, and if they aren’t seen before collection, the consequences can be devastating.

A commercial bin may look like shelter from the cold, rain or danger of the street, but once collection starts, the contents can be lifted into a waste vehicle and compacted.

That’s why awareness matters.

Look out for signs such as:

- broken or damaged locks
- bags or belongings nearby
- blankets or sleeping bags
- open or unsecured lids
- unusual signs that someone may have been using the area overnight

If something doesn’t look right, don’t ignore it.

If someone is in immediate danger or needs urgent medical help, call 999. If it isn’t an emergency, StreetLink can help connect someone sleeping rough with local support.

Would you know what to do?

A commercial bin can look completely normal from the outside.

But someone sleeping rough may have climbed inside during the night looking for somewhere dry, sheltered and hidden… and they could be completely concealed underneath bags and waste.

Then morning comes, and collections begin.

Commercial bins can be mechanically lifted and emptied into waste collection vehicles, where waste may then be moved and compacted by powerful machinery.

If somebody is hidden inside, the consequences could be life-changing - or fatal!

That’s why awareness matters.

⚠️ If you work in waste: Stay alert, follow your organisation’s safety procedures and never ignore something that doesn’t seem right.

🏢 If you’re a business: Make relevant employees aware of the risk and pay attention to unusual activity around your waste containers.

🤝 If you’re concerned about someone sleeping rough: Don’t simply assume somebody else will help. Help connect them with appropriate support. If they’re in immediate danger or require urgent assistance, call 999.

Bin Not Bed isn’t about judging why somebody climbed into a bin. It’s about making sure they get back out of it safely.

“Why would anyone sleep in a bin?”

It’s a question many people might ask.

But when you have nowhere safe to sleep, somewhere that is dry, enclosed and hidden can start to look like shelter.

The problem is what happens next.

A person can climb into a commercial waste container during the night, when a business is closed.

By morning, they could be completely hidden beneath bags and waste.

Then the collection arrives.

Commercial bins can be mechanically lifted and emptied into waste collection vehicles, where waste may then be compacted by powerful machinery.

Something that felt like shelter just hours earlier can suddenly become life-threatening.

That’s why we’ve launched Bin Not Bed.

This campaign isn’t about judging somebody for climbing into a bin.

It’s about asking why they were there in the first place, recognising the danger and helping connect people with support.

A bin is not a bed. But for some people, it is.

Today, KCM is launching Bin Not Bed: a campaign created to raise awareness of the potentially life-threatening dangers of sleeping in commercial waste containers.

For someone experiencing homelessness, a bin may appear to offer shelter from the cold, rain and dangers of sleeping outside.

But when morning comes and waste collections begin, that shelter can become incredibly dangerous.

Someone hidden amongst the waste could be difficult for a driver to see. If a container is lifted and emptied into a waste collection vehicle, the consequences could be life-changing, or fatal.

And we know this risk is real.

One of our own drivers has previously discovered a man sleeping beneath the waste inside a commercial bin during a collection. Thankfully, he was found before the collection continued.

Bin Not Bed is about preventing the next incident before it happens.

Working alongside our campaign partner, Help4homelessveterans, we want to educate businesses, waste professionals and communities about the risk, while never forgetting the person at the centre of it.

PREVENT avoidable injuries through awareness.
PROTECT vulnerable people by staying alert.
SUPPORT people experiencing homelessness by helping connect them with appropriate services.

This isn’t about judgement.

It’s about recognising that if someone feels a bin is their safest place to sleep, they need support, not stigma.

Today is just the beginning.

A bin is not a bed.
