⌚ TIME FOR BED... BUT FIRST, ONE LAST LITTLE TREASURE!

It's almost time for the team at Hansons Norfolk to get some well-earned sleep ahead of tomorrow's October Auction!

It's a busy week getting everything ready, and the team are looking forward to welcoming customers, old and new, into the saleroom.

But before we switch off the lights, here's just ONE LAST LOT for you!

And what a lovely little timepiece it is!

This elegant early 20th century American ladies' cocktail watch features a 10k gold case, stamped accordingly to the inside.

Cocktail watches became particularly fashionable during the early decades of the 20th century, when ladies' wristwatches were increasingly seen as both practical accessories and beautiful pieces of jewellery.

Delicate and stylish, these little watches were often worn for special occasions and evenings out, combining the elegance of fine jewellery with the craftsmanship of traditional watchmaking.

A charming piece of vintage style, and a lovely way to finish our auction previews!

Behind every military medal is a story, and sometimes that story is one of extraordinary courage, sacrifice and survival.

Appearing in our forthcoming Hansons Norfolk October Auction is a fascinating First World War medal trio awarded to Private Alfred Whistler, 8391, of the 1st Battalion Cheshire Regiment.

Born in Paddington, London, on 28th January 1889, Alfred was an agricultural labourer before enlisting in the Cheshire Regiment in 1907.... On 24th August 1914, the 1st Battalion Cheshire Regiment made a desperate rearguard stand at Audregnies, helping to protect the retreating British Army.

Alfred was reported missing, but had in fact been captured at Dour, Belgium, whilst serving with B Company.

He would spend more than four years as a prisoner of war before finally being repatriated on 31st December 1918. He was eventually discharged from the Army in March 1920, having served for more than thirteen years.

This poignant medal group comprises his 1914 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal, each a reminder of one man's extraordinary wartime experience.

A fascinating opportunity for collectors of militaria and those interested in the personal stories behind the First World War.

πŸ”¨ BEHIND THE ROSTRUM | What Does It Mean to Be an Auctioneer?

There's something rather special about the atmosphere of an auction room. The anticipation as the next lot is presented, the excitement of competing bids and, of course, the familiar sound of the auctioneer's gavel bringing the bidding to a close.

But what does it really mean to be an auctioneer?

It's certainly about more than standing behind a rostrum and calling out numbers!

A good auctioneer needs a keen eye, a quick mind, a confident voice and, perhaps most importantly, the ability to read a room.

It's knowing when to encourage another bid, when to allow a moment's hesitation and how to keep the excitement going, whilst ensuring that every bidder, whether in the room, online or on the telephone, has a fair opportunity to participate.

There's an art to it. A combination of knowledge, timing, personality and a little theatre!

And behind every lot that comes under the hammer, there's often a story. A treasured family possession, a collector's long-sought discovery or an object beginning a new chapter with its next owner.

This coming Saturday (17th October) at Hansons Norfolk saleroom, our very own Oscar Crocker takes his place behind the rostrum, helping to turn months of preparation, cataloguing and valuations into that all-important moment when the bidding begins.

For an auctioneer, few things can be quite as satisfying as watching two determined bidders compete for something they both desperately want!

After all, an auction isn't simply about selling things. It's about people, history, excitement and finding the next custodian for something special.

WEDGWOOD | A PROUD BRITISH HERITAGE CAPTURED ON CANVAS

With the recent news of job losses and changes to production at Wedgwood's historic Staffordshire factory, the future of Britain's traditional pottery industry has once again been brought into the spotlight.

For more than 260 years, the name Wedgwood has been synonymous with British craftsmanship, innovation and beautiful ceramics, a legacy that began with Josiah Wedgwood in 1759.

So, this rather special painting appearing in our forthcoming Hansons Norfolk October Auction feels particularly poignant.

Painted in 1974 by Elwyn James (1943–1977), an artist and potter associated with Wedgwood, this substantial oil on board depicts the original Wedgwood factory works at Etruria, Stoke-on-Trent.

But there's an interesting story behind it!

The painting is one of a series of twelve commissioned to celebrate the bicentenary of American Independence in 1976. Based on original drawings by Josiah Wedgwood, the paintings were exhibited alongside Wedgwood pottery and artefacts at the Waldorf Hotel in New York.

Measuring an impressive 95cm x 72cm, this signed and dated work is accompanied by a letter of provenance from the owner.

At a time when the future of traditional British manufacturing remains a subject of much discussion, this painting is a wonderful reminder of Wedgwood's extraordinary contribution to our industrial, artistic and cultural heritage.

A fascinating piece for collectors of British art, industrial history and, of course, Wedgwood enthusiasts!

🐎 A HORSE WITH HISTORY! A GLIMPSE INTO ANCIENT CHINA

Imagine a piece of history that could be nearly 2,000 years old!

Amongst the fascinating lots appearing in our forthcoming Hansons Norfolk October Auction is this wonderful ancient Chinese terracotta horse, possibly dating to the Han Dynasty (206 BC – AD 220).

Horses held great importance in ancient China, symbolising wealth, power and prestige. During the Han Dynasty, beautifully modelled terracotta horses were often placed in tombs as funerary offerings, intended to accompany and serve their owners in the afterlife.

This remarkable example has been modelled in two separate sections, with the head and neck fitting onto the main body.

What makes it particularly interesting are the surviving traces of its original painted decoration, including reddish-brown colouring, spotted detailing across the chest, black painted eyes and eyebrows, and the white outline of a bridle.

Standing approximately 35cm tall, it is a fascinating reminder of the craftsmanship, beliefs and traditions of ancient Chinese civilisation.

A wonderful opportunity for collectors of Asian art, archaeology and historical objects!

✨ A TOKEN OF ESTEEM A PIECE OF VICTORIAN HISTORY!

Sometimes the most interesting antiques are those that have a story to tell, and this lovely Victorian silver s***f box certainly has one!

Appearing in our forthcoming Hansons Norfolk October Auction, this beautifully engraved silver s***f box was presented to a gentleman named John Nicol in recognition of his services as Treasurer of the Inkerman Friendly Society.

The inscription reads:
"Presented to John Nicol, by the Inkerman Friendly Society, as a token of esteem for his services as treasurer, Inkerman 13th April 1859."

The Inkerman Friendly Society was a mutual organisation based in Bilsdale, North Yorkshire, operating from 1855 until 1985. Such societies played an important role in Victorian communities, providing support and financial assistance to their members.

Interestingly, the s***f box itself predates the presentation, bearing Birmingham hallmarks for 1848 and the maker's mark of Edward Smith.

A charming piece of Victorian silver, but also a wonderful little piece of social history, commemorating an individual's contribution to his local community more than 165 years ago.

⌚ A VICTORIAN MASTERPIECE OF TIMEKEEPING!

Before wristwatches became the everyday accessory we know today, a fine gold pocket watch was a gentleman's prized possession, combining precision engineering with beautiful craftsmanship.

And what a superb example we have appearing in our forthcoming Hansons Norfolk October Auction!

This handsome Victorian 18ct gold cased centre seconds chronograph pocket watch is a lovely reminder of an era when watches were made to be treasured and passed down through generations.

The 18ct gold case bears the mark of Isaac Jabez Theo Newsome, with Chester hallmarks and an 'M' date letter.

Of particular interest is the chronograph mechanism, operated by a small rose gold sliding button on the side of the case, an ingenious feature of Victorian watchmaking.

Accompanied by three keys, this is a fascinating piece for collectors of antique timepieces and those who appreciate the craftsmanship of a bygone age.

Could this be the golden opportunity you've been waiting for?
