Meet one of our summer interns, Tom Woodrow, who has been working with our Electronics & Software Engineering team 🔧

During his placement, Tom has had the chance to work across a range of projects, develop practical engineering skills and learn more about the different career paths available within electronics and software engineering.

For Tom, one of the biggest benefits has been getting to experience the realities of working in industry and using skills that can’t be taught in a university setting. It’s also helped him think about where he’d like to specialise during the rest of his studies and what he might want to pursue after university.

We’re really pleased to have him as part of the team this summer 👏

What does ppm and ppb actually mean ⁉️

Parts per million and parts per billion are used to describe extremely small concentrations, but the difference in scale can be difficult to visualise.

As a simple time comparison:
• One part per million is approximately one second in 11.6 days ⏱️
• One part per billion is approximately one second in 31.7 years 🗓️

In gas detection, concentrations at ppm or ppb levels can still be significant. Hazardous gases may be present at concentrations that cannot be reliably identified by sight or smell alone, making suitable monitoring essential.
