I have always loved my job 😄 Over the years, I’ve been lucky enough to work with some truly wonderful horses 🐴 and gain experience across so many different areas of the equine world.

I’m incredibly grateful to have a career that I’m so passionate about and to continue learning, developing and helping horses wherever I can. 💜

Ever wondered what the actual difference is between an *equine massage therapist* and an *equine sports therapist*?

While both work wonders on a horse’s musculoskeletal system, their training and day to day focus look quite different!

Here is a quick breakdown:
• Equine sport Massage Therapists generally complete vocational qualifications (like a Level 2-4) to practice manual muscle manipulation. Their primary goal is relieving daily tension, reducing spasms, and helping horses relax
• Equine Sports Therapists take a broader, more academic approach—often studying a full university degree or high-level advanced diplomas. Their focus is heavily rooted in pathology, biomechanics, exercise physiology, and sports-specific injury rehabilitation.

Because I wanted to offer the most comprehensive care possible, I chose the sports therapy route. I completed a 3-year degree in equine sports therapy, did extra training specifically in massage, and am now studying for an MSc in Veterinary Physiotherapy to expand my treatment toolkit even further.

👀 Before booking any equine therapist, it is imperative to verify their specific qualifications and professional insurance, as the industry is unregulated and standard massage courses differ vastly from advanced sports therapy degrees.

🐴 What’s in my equine therapy practitioner kit and why? 🐴

One thing that I have learned over the years as an equine therapist is that horse is completely different in how they present in posture, balance, movement and behaviour, so I use a range of tools alongside hands-on assessment and treatment, selecting what is appropriate for each individual horse:

🎗️ Kinesiology Tape
The gentle elastic tension can create a subtle lifting effect on the skin and tissues, supporting movement, circulation and sensory feedback.

〰️ Equissage Device
Uses therapeutic vibration to encourage circulation and relaxation, helping support muscles and soft tissues.

🔥 Heat Pad
Heat increases tissue temperature and circulation, helping to relax tight muscles and is particularly useful for stiffness, chronic conditions and pre-exercise preparation.

🦶 Surefoot Pads
The unstable surface challenges proprioception and balance, encouraging the horse to engage its deeper stabilising muscles.

🔴 Low-Level Laser Therapy
Also known as photobiomodulation, therapeutic light is used to support cellular processes, tissue repair and recovery, without producing heat.

🤲 My Hands – My Favourite Tool!
Nothing replaces skilled hands-on assessment. Palpation allows me to feel changes in muscle tone, tension and tissue quality, helping guide treatment and monitor how the horse responds.

The most important part of my toolkit isn’t the equipment — it’s knowing when, where and why to use it for each individual horse which is why I am always seeking research informed approaches 😃

Ever wonder how water treadmills target specific muscles and joints? 🐴💧Veterinary research shows that the water level on a treadmill completely changes how a horse uses its body. When water is low (around the fetlocks), horses naturally lift their knees and hocks higher, which is excellent for gently increasing joint flexibility without any hard impact. When the water is raised higher, the natural resistance encourages them to activate their core, lift their backs, and engage their large hindquarter muscles (like the glutes). Science proves that this targeted movement helps horses build a stronger topline and balanced muscle tone in a safe, low-strain environment 🐴💧This helps to prepare them for activity we ask them to do which reduces injury risk.
Always consult your vet or professional team first to ensure your horse is ready for this therapy. Introducing it at the right time and for the right length of time is essential. When used correctly, it provides incredible support for your horse’s long-term health, soundness, and overall comfort.
