7 years ago I was listening to Melanie Perkins co-founder of Canva and thinking “how the hell do people build things like this?” and next week, I’m hosting an event at Canva UK HQ🤯

I’d started my first business back in 2018 and “How I Built This” with Guy Raz was basically my soundtrack, I used to go on walks when my son was in the buggy (probably avoiding his nap) 😴 and listen with fascination to each episode, one of my all time favourites was with Melanie and the story of how she built Canva, and one thing Melanie said stuck a cord with me, it was about getting people to see the same future that you can see.

I’ve thought about that a LOT over the years, because when I built flockhere that’s exactly what I had to do.

I had this vision of creating little micro-communities of people working alongside each other so you could build your business without feeling so bloody alone in it.

I had to get other people to see that vision too, and over 400 people backed my crowdfunding campaign because they believed in that future too.

And now, next week, I’m hosting an event at Canva HQ, that feels pretty bloody surreal.

We’re going to spend the day doing something I think we all desperately need more time for actually creating our content.

I’m always thinking about how I can build flockhere into something women actually want to use.

Even when I’m sat at a football pitch at the weekend waiting for one of my boys to finish training 😂

We’re building flockhere 2.0 at the moment and I keep coming back to the same thing:

How do we make it genuinely useful for women who work from home?

Not just something you go to an event through.

Summer may have slowed things down a little, but things have still been happening behind the scenes at flockhere and now we’re ramping things back up.

flockhere is all about working alongside people, feeling less alone and making remote work feel more connected.

Our regular coworking meet-ups are back in St Albans. Come for the work, stay for the coffee, chats and connections.

We’ve partnered with coworking spaces so you can book a desk through Flockhere — a bit like ClassPass, but for co-working. Try different spaces without committing to one.

Feels like everyone’s on holiday while you’re still working?

You’re definitely not the only one.

In fact, one of our coworking sessions last week was one of the busiest we’ve had this summer.

It was a reminder that, even in August, plenty of us are still looking for a change of scenery, a few focused hours and the chance to work alongside other people. 👌

That’s why we’re keeping our weekly coworking sessions running throughout August, all in St Albans before our London meetups return in September.

I read something this week that said, “You don’t build communities, you create the environment for them.”

I thought that summed up flockhere perfectly.

We’re not trying to build one huge networking group where you turn up, don’t know anyone and leave with a handful of LinkedIn connections.

We’re creating the environment for smaller, local micro-communities to grow, whilst still feeling part of something bigger.

A place where familiar faces become part of your working week. Where you know you’ll always have someone to sit with. Where showing up doesn’t feel daunting because there’s a genuine sense of belonging.

I think that’s what community really is. Not being in a room with hundreds of people. But feeling like you belong when you walk through the door.

We’ve never been interested in building the “biggest” community.

Just one where people know your name. 💛
