One of the reasons why I started this business as a Virtual Assistant is because I saw a need, and I wanted to provide a solution. But I'm also a big advocate for working for WHO you want to work for, and by running my own business, I have this choice also.
In the PA industry we hear the phrase "you're very replaceable" all too often. Gee, thanks. And the more employers tell us this, the less we think of ourselves, the harder we work to prove ourselves, and the work/life balance gets all the more blurred.
And to top it off, if the other PAs you work with also have this mindset, it's hard to feel valued and appreciated for who YOU are.
When we get into this mindset, if a conflict arises, we're very quick to blame ourselves. The boundary lines appear blurry and we stress about our actions, because we don't want to upset anyone.
But the fact is, being in a supportive role is a two-way street. I have to want to work for that person, and the company, and they have to want me to work for them. Showing that you value and appreciate your PA goes very far!
I'm here in support of my fellow assistants who find it hard to stand up for themselves in the office. Please, don't live in fear of losing your job if you feel you aren't being treated right.
