Our final project of 2024 was installing our first Tesla Powerwall 3 at a home in St. Albans :
- 4.89 kWp of solar (11 x AIKO Nester 470Wp panels)
- 5 kW of continuous power (with thicker cables used to support any future increase)
- 13.5kWh battery capacity
- Whole home backup using the Tesla Backup Gateway and an earth rod
- Tesla Charger in anticipation of a new EV this year (VAT free when installed with their solar system)
- Octopus Flux solar & battery tariff

The customer had experienced power cuts on their road in the past so opted for a whole home backup configuration. We put as mush solar capacity as could fit on the South-facing roof as their energy consumption will increase in future with an EV and potentially other low-carbon technology. The 13.5 kWh battery capacity will cover their daily home energy requirements plus give them capacity to make the most of exporting energy at peak times and DFS schemes to maximise their returns from the solar & battery system.

We got super lucky with the weather during this tricky time of the year and the Tesla software was a delight for both us to configure the system and the customer to manage via the app. We are looking forward to installing more of these in 2025. 💪💪💪

Last week, we headed up to the NEC in Birmingham for Solar & Storage Live, the UK's largest solar trade show. The event provided an excellent opportunity to explore the latest innovations in the solar market, reconnect with our manufacturer partners, network with fellow installers, and attend insightful talks by industry experts on future changes impacting the UK solar sector.

Key Highlights from the Event:

Upcoming Changes to the MCS Certification
Changes are on the horizon for the MCS solar certification, aimed at addressing the issue of "cowboy" installers who, despite being MCS-certified, consistently deliver subpar installations. As we’ve previously been called in to rectify poor installations, we understand how a more direct MCS engagement with homeowners can help eliminate these unscrupulous operators.

Not All Solar Panels Are Created Equal
We spent time with the UK team from AIKO, learning about their NeoStar 470 Wp residential panels. These panels stand out for their innovative design, which moves connections to the back, maximizing energy capture from diffuse light. Although these panels come at a premium, their superior efficiency makes them a worthwhile investment for long-term energy gains.

Budget Solar and Battery Offerings
As GivEnergy installers, we've been impressed with their robust products, long warranties, and reliable support. However, we took a close look at their no-frills POLAR ESS inverter and battery system at the event. While affordability is key to driving wider adoption of solar, the system's shorter warranty, lower build quality, and IP rating raise concerns about its longevity. We worry this could be a case of false economy.

Financing Solar Installations
With mortgages, credit cards, and car leasing being common household financial tools, why not apply the same approach to solar? We met with Hometree, whose "Solar Plan" allows homeowners to install solar without any upfront costs, with monthly repayments offset by the savings generated from the system. While this model may not suit everyone, it certainly provides a compelling option for making solar more accessible.

The sun came out for us on market day in St Albans a few weeks ago and we had some great solar related conversations with passersby. Special thanks to our partners EcoFlow and GoodWe for providing dummy units of their battery and inverters so our visitors could get a close up look of the equipment. We are already planning our next one in the early Summer and watch this space!

Another solar and battery installation in St Albans:

🌿 ⚡ Adding solar, battery and an EV charger to support this 3 phase family home that had already disconnected from the gas supply and installed an air source heat pump

☀ ⬛ The design involved 18 x Viridian Solar in roof 405 Wp panels across two roof orientations, totalling 7.29 kWp.

🏠 GivEnergy 11kW 3 phase inverter and 10.2 kWh battery were installed in a nook in the side alley of the property

🚗 GivEnergy EV charger installed that communicates with the inverter for seamless charging of the EV from the sun
