Orange vs Yellow – Which should you choose? 🚧🤔

It’s the age-old question in the trade: Orange or Yellow? While both keep you visible, the "correct" choice usually depends on where you’re standing.

The Comparison:

🟡 Fluorescent Yellow (The All-Rounder)

Best For: General construction, warehousing, and roadworks.

Why? It is the brightest colour to the human eye under most light conditions.

The Catch: It can occasionally blend into bright green foliage or rural backgrounds in the height of summer.

🟠 Fluorescent Orange (The Specialist)

Best For: Rail (Network Rail), sea fog environments, and quarrying.

Why? Orange provides the strongest contrast against "busy" backgrounds like green fields or grey stone.

The Law: If you are working on or near the tracks in the UK, RIS-3279-TOM standards mean Orange is your only legal option to avoid confusion with signal flags.

When was the last time you replaced your Hi-Vis? 🧼⚠️

It might sound like a sales pitch, but dirty or faded hi-vis can actually be illegal.

Once the fluorescent material gets covered in oil, grease, or site dust, it loses its ability to react with UV light. Similarly, if the reflective tape is cracked or worn, it won't "bounce" light back to drivers at night.

💡 Top Tip: Check the "care label." Most garments have a maximum number of washes (often 25) before they no longer meet safety standards.

If your kit is looking a bit "grey," it’s time for a refresh.
