Reflection on Sharing Lived Experience with a Young Person to Inspire Hope and Aspirations

Engaging in the CPD activity of sharing my own lived experiences with a young person to foster hope and inspire aspirations has been a profound learning opportunity. Through this interaction, I gained a deeper understanding of the positive impact that personal stories and authentic connections can have in creating trust and motivation in young people who may feel discouraged or disconnected from their future.

One key learning was recognizing the importance of transparency and authenticity in professional relationships with young people. By sharing my personal experiences in an appropriate and safe way, I was able to show the young person that setbacks and challenges can be part of a pathway to growth and success. This helped in building a more genuine rapport, as the young person saw me not only as a professional but as someone who had faced similar struggles. I learned that sometimes, sharing these aspects of myself can create a powerful bond, giving the young person a model for resilience and perseverance.

Another valuable insight from this activity was the power of shared vulnerability in building trust. By opening up about some of the challenges I faced and overcame, I demonstrated that it’s okay to acknowledge struggles and that seeking support can be a strength. This helped the young person feel less isolated in their experiences, fostering a greater sense of trust in both myself and, hopefully, other adults in their support network. From this, I learned that intentional vulnerability, when used appropriately, can significantly impact a young person’s ability to feel connected and understood.

Reflecting on this experience also underscored for me the importance of maintaining professional boundaries while sharing. I was mindful to keep my story relevant and appropriate, focusing on aspects that were likely to resonate and support the young person’s growth without oversharing. This approach allowed me to model healthy boundaries and professional integrity, something that I now see as essential when incorporating personal experiences into my practice.

Finally, this experience reaffirmed my belief in the potential of hope-building as a tool for empowerment. By demonstrating that challenges can be temporary and that there are paths forward, I saw a shift in the young person’s demeanor. They became more open to discussing their own goals and dreams, even taking an interest in how they could start building a plan for their future. I learned that one of the most valuable things I can provide as a social worker is not only practical support but the belief that positive change is possible.

This CPD activity has helped me understand that, when carefully and professionally managed, sharing lived experiences can be an invaluable tool in social work. It has deepened my commitment to using my role to empower young people to see beyond their current circumstances and take small, meaningful steps toward their aspirations. This reflective practice has enriched my own professional development and encouraged me to continue exploring ways to use personal insights as a bridge to foster hope and positive change for the young people I work with.
