“It's pretty much a standard size.” A sentence capable of striking fear into tradespeople everywhere. 😄 Then the photo arrives. There's a curve at the top, one side isn't quite the same as the other and “roughly” has been doing some very heavy lifting. That's why we'd always rather see what you're actually working with. With shaped frames, the interesting bit is usually hiding in the detail.

An arch can look perfectly straightforward on a drawing. Then you remember somebody has to make it, glaze it, move it, deliver it and fit it. That's the bit we find interesting. A good shaped frame isn't just one that looks right when it leaves the factory. It needs to make sense for everything that happens afterwards too. Sometimes the cleverest part of a specialist job is thinking three or four steps ahead.

You know the job. Ten windows you could practically quote with your eyes closed... and then there's that one. An arch. A circle. An angle. Something the architect has clearly decided should keep everybody on their toes. 😄 That's where a specialist supplier becomes useful. Take care of the straightforward frames as usual and send the awkward one our way. One unusual opening doesn't need to turn into an unusual problem.

Specialisation does something interesting to the way people look at their work. Details that would be almost invisible to somebody outside an industry become immediately recognisable to those inside it. For us, that happens with shaped frames. Different proportions, radii and geometries aren't simply variations on an arch; they create different manufacturing considerations and very different finished results. Expertise often starts with learning to notice the differences other people don't need to see.

The longer you specialise, the more you notice.

The frame might be complicated. Getting a price for it doesn't need to be. Our online quoting and ordering platform gives trade customers a straightforward way to price shaped PVCu frames without turning every enquiry into a chain of phone calls and emails. Because when your customer is waiting for a figure, “I'll get back to you when I've managed to price the arch” isn't especially helpful. Let the shape be the difficult bit.

Give three people the same unusual opening and they might start in three completely different places. That's where specialist experience gets interesting. Before thinking about how to make it, you're looking for the detail that could change everything else. The awkward junction. The dimension that needs another question. It's funny how often you can tell how a project is going to go within the first ten minutes of talking about it.

Not because the answers are already there, but because the questions are.

The best projects aren't the ones where everything is perfect from day one. They're the ones where people are open, curious and happy to work through the details together. That's usually when good ideas happen.

Good projects usually start with good conversations.
