I mean, what else would you do with an inspiring sculpture of a poppers bottle…
reflects upon the meaningful history of q***r counterculture.
Ubi Sunt — cast ceramic poppers bottle and cap, edition of 14. Tiny vases for single stems 🌼 Available from (link in bio) ✨
Installation views from FRUIT at 25 London Road, St Leonards-on-Sea. Until 5 August.
The title comes from the Latin “Ubi sunt qui ante nos fuerunt?” meaning “Where are those who were before us?” The arrangement of the ceramic poppers bottles is perhaps reminiscent of objects in a Vanitas painting and — like much of the work in FRUIT — they serve as a kind of momento mori. To artist Jamie Atherton they are also pretty much the crux of the entire installation. Whereas many of the drawings forefront youth, the reference here is to a line attributed to St. Augustine: “O homo, dic mihi, ubi sunt reges, ubi sunt principes, ubi imperatores, qui fuerunt ante nos…” which translates as “O man, tell me, where are the kings, where are the princes, where the emperors, who had been before us?”
