‘Make Time For Personal Development’

Your growth as a proffesional musician is as important as projects/gigs you work on for your clients. Make time to schedule for networking events, reading, courses that may improve certain aspects of your life and podcasts you feel you will benefit from. Also making time to reflect on what is working and what is not working in your career or even in your personal life.

Investing in yourself should be a priority to help you work better and improve your approach to personal and business goals.

‘Why work for someone, when you can be your own boss!’

Career-conscious go getters for a work life available only through a location-independant career lifestyle. To evolve with the new world of work, you have to adapt at becoming responsible for your career. Think of yourself as a ‘business of one’, capable of working with multiple clients. Creating your own dream job and career towards a desired future, you have to be your own boss-controlling your career, finding and seizing the right opportunities, and building an amazing portfolio in the process.

Think of it this way; your skills, experience and personal traits that make you who you are don’t disappear if you lose your job, or if your employer goes bankrupt. Your life doesn’t stop if your immediate boss quits. Your unique skills are yours, and no one can ever take them away from you. The sooner you realize how useful you are to yourself and your career, the better of your future prospects. Think of your career as a seriees of experiences. Your freelancer career is a portfolio of your past work. You can only get better with time.

The ability to spot opportunities and take initiative is a rare skill that you nevertheless need to thrive in the future as an independant worker. Entrepreneurs see and often seek out opportunities. They apply unconventional tools and approaches to existing challenges. They are agile and can adapt to changing business environments.

As you complete projects, the skill to spot and pick the next best ones will become even more important to your freelance career. When you’re a freelancer, you are also, in a fundamental sense, an entrepreneur. Over time, you will build a list of clients, expand your network, and assemble a track record of achievments that are your own. In that sense, freelancing can offer a path to building your own small business. A little entrepreneurial zeal can give you a distinct advantage in your independant work career. Start thinking like a creative entrepreneur. That means instead of just working for hire, you can start creating business assests (personal blogs, books, online courses) whose value will increase over time.

“It’s Not What You Know, It’s Who You Know”

One of the most important bits of advice I give to young musicians starting out is, to build a network go out there and meet people!

Traditional networking is still the best way to aquire new clients. Online and offline networking is one of the most active ways to get gigs and would go as far to say the most important.

For new musicians starting out, it can be uncomfrotable and awkward getting new clients, espcially if you are an introvert.

I always say to clients, do you remmember the first time you performed in public? How nervous were you? Was it daunting? Then I say what about the second time, or the third time? Did you feel as nervous? And usually they would say no. Because you were getting more comfortable being in that enviroment.

It is the same process as networking the more you go out there and speak to people the more confident you become and it can be a rewarding expeirence, so think of the time and money spent at these events as an investment in yourself an opportunity to make real contacts with prospective clients.

Don’t restrict yourself to just proffesional contacts; make sure your friends and family know what you do. They can refer your services to their proffesional network. You can also use social media to reach out to people who may need your services. Like any business realtionship that takes time to grow and build trust, you have to consistently build and maintain great relationships as you grow. Your sucess will largely depend on the business relationshps you nurture.

‘Fear’

False Evidence Appearing Real

Fear has a huge impact, espcially when it comes to your life, work and your finances.

“WHAT IF I FAIL?”

“WHAT IF I DON’T GET CLIENTS?”

“WHAT IF I DON’T MAKE ENOUGH MONEY TO SUPPORT MY FAMILY?”

These are all real concerns that need to be addressed. Any life-changing journey can bring uncertainty, but with thoughtful preperation, your music journey can be the most fulfilling decision of your life.

Like all other decisions and actions you take in life, choosing to work for yourself requires a thoughtful plan. If you propose to leave your job to fully commit to an independent work career, or are thinking about starting a side hustle while remaining in a full time job, you need to prepare yourself for a change of mindset.

You have to start to plan for work, personal and the financial reponsibilities, and the commitments that will define your new career.

Write down all the reasons why a career in the music industry is a viable career option for you and how you will go about doing this. If you continue to feel the fear even after you have started, read the list and remind yourself why you pursued life as a proffesional musician.

‘Your Time Is Money’

I have always believed money is a tool. Time is your most valuable resource when you choose to work for yourself. Keeping strict control over how you manage your time is critical, otherwise important things get neglected in favour of urgent things.

In some cases, you realize you forgot to send invoices (again) and that really exciting proposal is overdue, and the project you’re working on is slipping on its timeline. If you juggle multiple projects at the same time, the value of prioritization cannot be overemphasized.

Time,as it turns out, can work in your favour or against you. Planning and maximizing your time translates to better profitability. It can also create extra space in your personal life to do other personal things.

“You’re never going to be 100% ready, you just gotta say f@% it and do what feels right”

Succesful independant consultants are proactive. To succeed as a proffesional musician, you should think like an entrepreneur. The entreprenurial mindset is characterized by adventure, initiative, risk taking and perserverance.

One thing that links the most succesful on-demand workers in all industries is that they take a proactive approach to managing their careers. People who are ahead of the game in the music industry do not wait for a career emergency to reinvent themselves or update their portfolio.

How I was able to make a success working as a proffesional musician. I took an innovative approach to my career and I was willing to do more than what the average person was willing to do.

“It Is Impossible To Have A Great Life Unless It Is A Meaningful Life And It Is Very Difficult To Have A Meaningful Life Without Meaningful Work” - Jim Collins

There are many things you could do with your career, but the people who are most succesful have found a combination of fulfilment, money and flow. It is the mental state where your best work emerges without struggle.

Choose to work on projects that fulfil a higher puprose in your life. Passion will give you every reason to fulfil your dreams.

What I have found over the years working as a gigging musician. Freelancing can take up a lot of your productive time, so it is imperative to work on projects that bring out the best in you.

Yes, you need to work to pay the bills, but work is more than a means of earning in a living. If you do not enjoy what you do, chances are you will be miserable. Referencing back to my Flexibility post where a lot of people these day are looking for more self employment work and more flexible working hours.

Having purpose gives you the confidence to turn down projects that may stress or go against your moral code. Purposeful independant work gives you resiliance and strength for the ups and downs of self employment. Pursuing career fulfilment takes time. It takes practise, It’s a process, not a destination. Discovering what you care about, gaining the reputation for what you do, and building a career capital takes a little time, but it’s worth it.
