Here's a wonderful diary piece from Betty who recently joined us in our offices as part of a 3 week placement scheme run by Manchester International Festival's brilliant Factory Academy programme. IS IT POSSIBLE TO WORK FULL TIME, STUDY FULL TIME AND STILL BE A GOOD MUM? HAS ANYONE DONE THIS?
I think it is possible but hard!
I work full time. I started my A level class in 2019 {English Level 2}, in 2020 {Health and social care Level 2 and foundation GCSE English}, in 2021 {Maths Level 1 and 2}, and this year I am taking GCSE English final year. I have accomplished all this by also being a good mother with a 3 year old child and good wife.
I think it is possible but it can be really hard.
Especially for moms in their 20s. As I am one of them. I can say that I am lucky because my husband helps me out with some tasks in the house too. I manage my time by having good and free communication with my husband so I think it helps me more to decide and do what I want to do.
I work Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night shifts from 8pm to 8 am. And I go to school on Thursday and Friday all day. By that time my child will be in nursery school. I do all the housework, cooking, cleaning, doing laundry every evening and study every morning before they wake up around 4 am. It's my perfect time to read.
Being a mom, working full time and studying full time made me a better professional, because coming home every morning to my child reminded me of what I was working for. And being a professional made me a better mother, because by pursuing my dreams I was modelling my child how to pursue her dreams.
So I have 3 days left Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Then I decided to take a producing course. Because my plan is to join University in 2022 and do my degree in Film production management. It is something that I always wanted to do.
I started a production course with MIF and had my placement in Toasted Productions company. As this is my future goal to be a film producer. I have got the best experience in this company.
My first day was a bit nervous but the moment I met the crew I was relieved. Their first expression and greeting was great. When it came to the work I expected I would just watch and learn but it was more than that, they gave me a task to do on my own but with the help of them in the middle of course. I was excited. I did what I have been told to do and they have been showing me each department each day to be more experienced and I have been working with all the teams and got all the ideas I have ever wanted to know.
It's time for me to go forward to the next step.
