Today marks the start of (7-11 Nov 2022) . This is an annual event to showcase the great work Trustees do and provide opportunities for everyone to get involved and make a difference. 💜

Here at Wessex Community Action, supporting organisations in the sector with their governance is a pivotal part of the support we provide, particularly to volunteers and trustees.

In the lead up to this week, we have been sharing external links to some fantastic training on offer to support you. However, we can also directly help you and your organisation with any areas of development such as governance advice, trustee roles, responsibilities and recruitment. 🙌 We can also share and support you with our resources around promoting diversity and inclusion on your board of trustees.

Black History Month Wiltshire

To continue to celebrate Black History Month here in Wiltshire, we want to share some fantastic resources between Wiltshire’s Black and Minority Ethnic communities and the Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre.

This animated film is called ‘’Reactions and Racism’ was produced by 3 Wiltshire schools, to support the teaching of British Black History, particularly the experiences of the Windrush generation.

The elders interviewed for the project describe a range of reactions that they received from people when they came to the UK and this included racism, prejudice and discrimination. Awareness is everything.

To celebrate Black History Month here in Wiltshire, we want to share some fantastic resources between Wiltshire’s Black and Minority Ethnic communities and the Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre.

This animated film called ‘First Impressions’ was produced by 3 Wiltshire schools, to support the teaching of British Black History, particularly the experiences of the Windrush generation.

It is used in schools across Wiltshire to help develop a diverse and inclusive curriculum across the key stages, providing inspirational source material for creative writing, the performing and visual arts, and as part of students spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

Wessex Community Action is closing its office for a week, giving staff extra paid leave to show its appreciation for their tireless work. Chief Executive Amber Skyring and trustees feel it is the only way they could afford to reward staff.

October marks the start of Black History Month UK – a time to celebrate and remember African and Caribbean heritage peoples' achievements and contributions to the British economy, culture, and history. It's a chance to tell the stories of those less well-known Black Britons who we will forget if we don't showcase them 🖤

What is Black History Month UK?

Black History Month UK began in October 1987 by Akyaaba Sebo, a special projects coordinator of the Ethnic Minorities Unit at the now defunct Great London Council. He wanted to boost the self-esteem of Black British children and young adults by educating them on the long history and achievements of Black people living in the UK 🙌

What is the theme of Black History Month UK 2022?

The theme of Black History Month UK 2022 is ‘Sharing Journeys’. It’s to exploring the lives and stories of the people who came to Britain in the 19th and 20th centuries and helped laid the foundations of today’s diverse Black British Community 🤲
