⏰ The clocks go back this weekend!

But how do the shorter days affect solar panels?

Solar panels still generate electricity throughout autumn and winter – even on cloudy days.

But shorter days, more cloud and weaker sunlight mean they will naturally generate less than during the summer months.

That’s where good system design really matters.

☀️ Generate when daylight is available
🔋 Store excess electricity when possible
⚡ Use your energy intelligently throughout the day

Solar in Scotland is about designing a system around the conditions we actually have.

0% VAT on solar is ending.

Right now, qualifying domestic solar panel and battery storage installations benefit from 0% VAT.

That changes on 1 April 2027, when the rate is due to return to 5%.

So what does that mean in real terms?

On a £10,000 installation, 5% VAT adds £500.
On a £15,000 installation, it adds £750.

If solar is already on your radar, it's worth getting the process started sooner rather than later.

We’ve covered everything homeowners need to know in our latest blog, including:

☀️ When 0% VAT ends
🔋 Whether batteries are affected
💷 How much 5% VAT could add
📅 Why it’s worth planning ahead
🏠 Whether solar is still worth it after the change

If you’re thinking about solar in Scotland, now is a good time to look at your options.

The average UK diesel price has now reached a record 200.01p per litre, meaning a 55-litre fill-up costs around £110.

£110. For one tank.

If you’ve been thinking about making the switch to electric, numbers like that certainly make the conversation more interesting.

And if you already have solar?

Even better.

With the right setup, an EV charger can work alongside your solar system, allowing you to put more of the electricity generated at home towards charging your car.

Fuel prices aren’t just hurting households.

For businesses running vehicles, record diesel prices can quickly become a serious operating cost.

If you’re considering electric vehicles for your fleet, it’s worth looking at the bigger picture.

Solar panels can generate electricity at your premises during the day.
EV chargers give you somewhere to use it.

And battery storage can give you even more flexibility over when that energy is available.

For the right business, solar and EV charging can work together as part of a much wider energy strategy.

Less reliance on volatile fuel prices.
Less reliance on grid electricity.
More control over your own energy.

Another energy price rise. Another winter of wondering what happens next.

The new energy price cap came into force on 1 October, taking the typical household figure to £1,723 a year.

And this comes just three months after prices increased by 13% in July.
You can’t control wholesale energy prices.

You can’t control the next Ofgem announcement.

But you can reduce how much electricity you need to buy from the grid.

☀️ Generate your own electricity
🔋 Store excess power for later
⚡ Reduce your reliance on your energy supplier

If you’re fed up with constantly changing energy prices, it could be time to take back some control.

We had a good few days in Birmingham at Solar & Storage Live UK 2026 — always a great opportunity to see what’s coming next in the industry, catch up with suppliers and have some useful conversations around new tech.

Good speaking with MetSolar about their solar carport solutions — an interesting option for businesses looking to make better use of car park space while generating renewable energy at the same time.

It was also great to catch up with our friends at Solis, whose inverters we already use across many of our installations. We also got the chance to see their new all-in-one residential energy storage system, combining the inverter and stackable battery storage within a single integrated unit.

It’s due to come to the UK market and we’re really looking forward to being able to offer this to our customers!

A productive trip all round. ☀️🔋

You may have heard about the new plug-in solar panels

Solar panels you can set up at home and plug into a socket?

Sounds brilliant.

But are they actually any good?

For some people, they could be a useful way to generate a small amount of their own electricity.

But if you own your home and have a suitable roof, we’d still recommend looking at a properly designed rooftop solar system.

Why?

A professional solar installation can be designed around:

☀️ Your actual electricity usage
☀️ The available space on your roof
☀️ The direction and angle of your roof
☀️ Your future energy requirements
🔋 Battery storage
⚡ Maximising the amount of solar energy your home can use

Plug-in solar is an interesting development.

But if your goal is to make a meaningful reduction to your reliance on grid electricity, proper rooftop solar remains the solution we’d recommend exploring.

How many times have we heard this?

“Energy prices should come down soon.”

Then another price cap announcement arrives.

And up they go again.

If you’ve spent the last few years waiting for energy prices to become cheap and predictable again, you might be waiting a while.

Solar offers a different approach.

Instead of focusing entirely on what your energy supplier charges you…

Focus on how much electricity you need to buy from them.

Generate during the day.
Store excess energy in a battery.
Use more of your own electricity.
Buy less from the grid.

It won’t remove your energy bill completely.

But it can give you something energy customers haven’t had much of lately:

More control.

£1,723.

That’s the new annualised energy price cap figure for a typical dual-fuel household from October.

Another £60 added on.

And remember: the “price cap” does NOT cap your total bill. Use more energy and you pay more.

So what can you actually do about it?

One option is to reduce the amount of electricity you need to buy in the first place.

With solar panels, your roof starts generating electricity for your home.

Add battery storage and you can save excess solar energy to use later too.

You’ll still use the grid. You’ll still have an energy bill.

But you can become far less dependent on it.

Find out what solar could save your household with a FREE Eco Vision Energy quote.

October: energy prices rise again.

January: who knows?

That’s the problem.

The energy price cap changes every three months, and homeowners are constantly at the mercy of wholesale markets, global events and whatever happens to energy prices next.

Solar panels won’t make you completely independent from the grid.

But they CAN mean buying significantly less electricity from it.

Every unit you generate and use yourself is one less unit you need to buy from your supplier.

Instead of simply hoping energy prices come down, start producing more of your own.
