Yorkshire in Business Yorkshire In Business - real people, real businesses and real communities along the Yorkshire Coast. Many agencies faced merger or worse still closure.

Yorkshire in Business Ltd is a BEIS approved Enterprise Agency based in Scarborough and provisions business support services to the Yorkshire Coast.
•Business Support: Counselling and business advice is available to start-up companies and small businesses – and it’s usually free or heavily-subsidised. The unique impartiality of this support is at the heart of all Enterprise Agency activity and its value is regularly confirmed in surveys carried out amongst NFEA members’ clients.
•Business Training: A wide variety of training opportunities are provided in business planning, raising finance and other pre-start essentials.
•Managed Workspace: As your local Enterprise Agency, we operate managed workspace for start-ups and small firms, offering tenants a sheltered working environment in which the landlord is also the business adviser. Length of tenure can vary, but we offer 'easy in, easy out' terms with the provision of embedded business support. NEN members deliver business support services under contract to a wide range of public and private sector bodies including European Social Fund, DWP and, increasingly, to business customers directly. In offering local expertise and knowledge, NEN members also take pride in our independence since we are controlled by no single group of sponsors or supporters. Enterprise Agencies originated in the late 1970s, usually established as a partnership between business and local councils in response to high levels of unemployment and the demise of large sections of traditional industry. In the early days, many Local Enterprise Agency staff were seconded from larger Corporations such as British Rail, British Coal and British Steel, particularly in “one-company” towns. There have been innumerable changes in government structure and policy since that time, however agencies have remained adaptable to their ever-shifting market and there are over 100 Local Enterprise Agencies operating across England. Our Agency was first established in 1985 by Councillor Michael Pitts, first known as Scarborough, Filey & District Business Development Agency. In a short time the agency grew and purchased its first premises, the Sitwell Centre, which was just the start of many business start up units. It was also where Scarborough Filey & District BDA provided thousands of local businesses start up support for many years to come. Scarborough Filey & District BDA soon renamed and became well known to many as Scarborough Enterprise Agency as a member of NFEA (Natioanl Federation of Enterprise Agencies) now known as NEN. We moved to a new head office at Auborough Street, first known as Scarborough Business Centre. In 2004 Scarborough Enterprise Agency diversified into employability skills and was awarded the 'Breakthrough Project'. After a very successful year we continued being awarded 'Back to Work' contracts and have not looked back since. Due to our services widening out into North Yorkshire, Scarborough Enterprise Agency renamed in 2007 to Yorkshire Coast Enterprise Ltd and the Scarborough Business Centre became the Yorkshire Coast Enterprise Centre. In 2015 the Enterprise Agency movement as everyone knew it was on the brink of collapse. Government funds had for some time been assigned to national bodies such as Business Link and now LEPS. At this time Jenn Crowther current CEO and Director reinvented the agencies support services setting the standard and model for many agencies to follow suit. Establishing her own brand Yorkshire in Business Ltd it was the start of fresh look and reinvigorated image and services.

Congratulations Anthony Charles Robinson on today’s 10k the first of 7 10ks he is running in memory of my colleague and good friend Tracie Marson Edwards who lost her fight earlier this year to cancer. She has left a huge hole at Yorkshire in Business - one that can and will never be filled….. I mean look at some of our memories 💔

Anyone who wants to and can donate to our fundraiser here is the link (it’s much appreciated 🙏🏻)

The team behind Yorkshire in Business isn't suited and booted

We run businesses, juggle the school run, and work the same long hours as the entrepreneurs we support. No suits, no corporate script, just people who've actually done this.

Yorkshire in Business grew out of the Enterprise Agency movement, but founder Jenn Crowther built something different: a team with over 100 years of combined experience, all focused on practical help rather than textbook theory.

We start every conversation by asking why you're really in business, not just how you'll make money. Then we help you pin down who you're actually selling to, because that one question reshapes more business plans than anything else we see.

We also push clients to talk to real potential customers before the plan's finished. It changes things, every time.

What's the one question about your business you wish someone would actually help you answer?

🎉 THE RESET ROOMS IS COMING TO SCARBOROUGH! 🎉

We can finally share some very exciting news . . .

Renovations are officially underway at The Reset Rooms, our brand-new community movement and wellbeing hub on Queen Street in Scarborough – and we've been awarded £30,000 from the Movement, Activity and Sport Fund to help bring our plans to life! 🙌

The Reset Rooms is being created by Yorkshire in Business as a different kind of place to get moving, connect with others and explore opportunities within the health and wellbeing sector.

We know traditional gyms and fitness environments aren't for everyone. Cost, confidence, anxiety, previous experiences or simply feeling like you don't belong can all make taking that first step difficult.

So we're creating something different.
💃 A welcoming movement studio
🏋️ A friendly, beginner-focused gym
☕ A coffee and social room to meet, chat and connect
🏓 A games room bringing movement, fun and socialising together
🔨 And work has already started!

We're aiming to have our first sessions running from the movement studio in the second week of November.

From there, we'll phase in the games room, coffee room and gym in the lead-up to Christmas, gradually bringing the whole building to life.

💡 But The Reset Rooms isn't just about taking part…

We also want it to become a place where new health, fitness and wellbeing businesses can begin and grow.

Yorkshire in Business specialises in supporting people into self-employment and enterprise, and we want to bring that expertise into The Reset Rooms.

So perhaps you've thought about becoming a yoga or Pilates instructor. Maybe you're a personal trainer looking for somewhere to start building your client base. You might be a therapist, counsellor or wellbeing practitioner looking for office space. Or perhaps you have an idea for a completely different movement or wellbeing activity.

We'd love to hear from you.

We'll have office and therapy space, movement studio space and gym space available, with options including straightforward room hire and, where appropriate, commission or income-share arrangements to help people get started without taking on large overheads.

We also have access to funded programmes that can support people towards opportunities within the sector, including training and support to develop their idea into something sustainable.

We want local instructors, freelancers, volunteers and practitioners to have a genuine sense of ownership of The Reset Rooms and help us shape what happens here.

Because ultimately, this is a community project. ❤️

A place to move.
A place to connect.
And a place to create new opportunities.

Over the next few weeks we'll be sharing the renovation journey, introducing some of the people involved and revealing the first activities coming to The Reset Rooms.

And if you're reading this thinking “I could see myself being part of this” – whether that's taking part, volunteering, delivering something or starting your own health and wellbeing business – get in touch.
We'd really love to hear your ideas.

🚀 WE’RE READY TO LAUNCH OUR BRAND NEW PROJECT – Mentality Scarborough!

After months of planning, we're really excited to finally start delivering MENtality Scarborough, our new FREE wellbeing programme specifically for men.

MENtality has been created by Yorkshire in Business to give men more opportunities to move, connect, try something new and look after their wellbeing in a relaxed and welcoming environment.

The project has been made possible thanks to funding through the Mayor’s Men’s Mental Health Fund from York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority, supported by David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire. 💙

And we're kicking things off NEXT WEEK with our first activities!

🧘‍♂️ MENtality Yoga – Mondays at 2pm
🥪 Lunchtime Reset – Thursdays at 12pm

Both are completely FREE, specifically for men and suitable for absolute beginners. You don't need to be fit, flexible or have any previous yoga experience.

📍 For the first few weeks, we'll be based at YMCA Scarborough while we finish work on our new wellbeing space, The Reset Rooms, before moving into our permanent home.

And this is just the beginning... 👀

MENtality will also bring tap, movement activities, Brew & Banter, wellbeing workshops and more as the programme develops.

🎟️ Bookings for our first yoga sessions are open now:

Your first advisor meeting: what actually happens

Wondering what a first meeting with a business advisor actually involves? Here's the honest answer.

It starts with your "why", the reason behind the business that goes beyond making money. Sounds soft, but it shapes every decision after it.

Then we get into your target market properly: who they are, what they need, and whether you've actually spoken to any of them yet.

We'll also start unpicking your numbers. What it costs you to deliver your product or service, what you need coming in to cover outgoings, and whether your pricing actually stacks up. That follow-up session with Jo or the business advice team goes deeper into this, using your figures to test whether the idea holds together.

You'll leave with a plan built for you, not one written to impress a bank or investor.

What's the one question about your business you'd want a second opinion on?
