We are living in strange times, but as we lurch towards a new normality there has been reawakening in the need to ensure workplaces are safe. Electrical Equipment Testing, previously known as PAT Testing, is a significant part of this process.

In recent weeks I’ve serviced large factories through to small owner operated concerns as well as the recent phenomenon of equipment provided to staff working from home. In virtually every location I’ve found issues. Some relatively minor and in one significant case potentially life threatening. These services highlight once again just how important it is to take electrical safety seriously.

I am happy to undertake services of all sizes. The only variable being the total length of time taken. I test large premises just as thoroughly as I do the client with a handful of appliances. I have lost count of the number of clients who comment on my thoroughness. If you are paying for a service it’s vital that the service is performed not as quickly as possible but thoroughly and in accordance with current protocols.

I am happy to discuss the Electrical Equipment Testing process with new clients and provide a quote whatever the size of your business.

It’s been an interesting time for us all this Autumn, to say the least! Working practices have had to reflect the prevailing rules and I’m pleased to see how well my clients have coped. It hasn’t been easy but common sense and a determination to protect ourselves and others demonstrates the same critical attention to health as it does to our Duty of Care in the workplace. Electrical safety testing remains an essential element of that regime and I’m proud to offer a thorough, detailed and rigorous service that reflects that.

I’ve lost count of how many times new clients have mentioned that they haven’t seen other PAT technicians check inside plugs before! My eyesight is brilliant but I don’t have X-Ray vision - quickly removing the back of a plug to enable visual checks can reveal all manner of things from loose screws, cables in the wrong pins, missing cable bar, broken plastic, incorrectly rated fuses and it’s probably best if I don’t mention other items in place of fuses 😐

If a jobs worth doing - get it done by a thorough, professional and reliable company that prides itself on keeping an eye on the appliances, not the clock!

It’s been a busy few days fitting in lots of small jobs for sole traders and 'one man bands'.
I know from talking to clients who provide a third party service, such as a musician, or a mobile Disco for example, that they are increasingly being asked to provide PAT test certification by the venue. I well remember when we wanted our Ice Cream Trike plus a handful of other appliances certified a few years ago it was difficult finding a PAT company willing to test a relatively small number of appliances.
I recognise the issue and offer a low minimum fee and will try my best to fit small jobs in at short notice, often outside normal working hours.

After a very hectic month of PAT-ing I can safely say one job in particular has stood out from the rest.

I’ve seen bare wires, cracked plugs, broken enclosures, incorrect fuses and wrongly wired plugs, burnt out but still in use cable reals, and loads more things along these lines - some easily repairable, many resigned to the recycle bin. All this has further confirmed to me the importance of a rigorous and thorough regime of electrical safety testing on a regular basis. I always take time to explain my findings and make recommendations where appropriate. Every appliance tested receives a full technical report and certification, a printed pass or fail label, and the premises receive a certificate of compliance.

I have met some lovely people and it has been so positive to see new businesses flourishing and great care taken with electrical safety in the main. The job that stood out above all others though was at a local care home recently. The level of care afforded to the clients was exemplary and a pleasure to witness. It was lovely to take time to chat to the residents and to listen to their stories - a real bonus for me on a busy couple of days of testing 😁
