Woodfine Wine

Woodfine Wine Restoring a biodiverse ecosystem to produce exceptional organic produce – with wine at its heart ? We use ancient winemaking techniques.

Our Story:

Our wines capture something ephemeral: the time and place in which they were made. That place is Newbarn Farm, a 300-year-old smallholding in the Chiltern Hills that backs onto the ancient and richly diverse Hodgemoor Woods. Our Smallholding:

Newbarn is becoming organic for the first time – creating a regenerative ecosystem that produces exquisite food and drink. Already, the farm is

home to honeybees, wildflower meadows, hedgerows, chickens and some grazing animals. And then there’s the larger ecosystem of Seer Green, our village. Almost everything we do is done locally – from families tending to our hens, to local artists creating our labels. Wherever we can, we keep produce, work and money flowing within our community. www.newbarnfarm.org

Minimal Intervention:

Our wines are a record of how each year passes through our farm. The sun, rain and peculiarities of any given year express themselves in the land. Every element of our ecosystem contributes: there are insects and birds among the wildflowers, manure from the chickens and sheep tending to our meadow grasses and flowers in the old-fashioned way. Minimal intervention is at the heart of this. Time leads the process – we’re simply stewards.

Too holistic.

Yesterday, we had the privilege of hosting 30 special guests for a tour and tasting, as we do every two weeks. One of the guests is someone I’ve admired from afar for a long time: . The zero waste philosophy he has become known for is a remarkable thing, philosophically and practically, lived through his experience . An education.

If you’re not familiar, it can be simplified to running a restaurant in London without any bins. Just stop and think about that for a moment.

And with courage, Doug is now on circuit breaker, and a search for what next.

A story he told was of someone that described one of his projects as “too holistic” to be commercially successful. It combined philosophy, science, spirit, systems change, and culture. Too holistic.

Reflecting on that story, it’s hard to miss the tragic irony that something holistic cannot be considered commercial in the system we have created for ourselves. This gilded prison. But then it’s also not surprising…it explains why our lived world is so sterile and not holistic….and why people yearn for wellness, connection, nature…and holistic experience.

I’m sure it was disappointing to be told you’re too holistic.

Thinking about it now, though, what a raging compliment it was. It could even be a brand.

If serving people and communities with belief in a better system, a different path, products and experiences that go beyond pure consumption, is all “too holistic”, then what a privilege to be considered that. I say stick to being too holistic. The world needs it, and we need to batter down the door.

Thanks and , as ever… 💚

Home grown.

A farm we have grown with, vines that we have grown since bare root whips, tended by volunteers for years, and organic-certified grapes that were wild fermented with zero additions of any kind. Bottled with friends, labelled one-at-a-time by hand. Artwork by friends. Drunk by a tribe that believe in something bigger than themselves.

It’s a long journey from soil to glass, with lots of twists and turns. But capturing the energies of the earth and like-minded people is the name of the game.

You don’t need confected outcomes, produced in factories of flavours, to get drunk on soulless liquid.

Just drink this.

Flowering.

The vines have bounced back from frost damage and are getting ready to flower.

Not far off last year on timing, although those worst-hit by frost will be later and less flower bunches.

Endgame.

The last of the 2025 vintage is bottled: Lost Vagus White (Chardonnay) and Lost Vagus Rosé (Pinot + Chardonnay), both with 9 months barrel ageing, is all in bottle and ready to ship.

They’re stonking….super happy with these bad boys.

We also bottled a special release. It will sit in bottle for a while, but a barrel-aged, 3-week skin-contact / orange Bacchus. One tank held back from the Lost Vagus Orange (where the Bacchus is blended with Solaris). Richer, creamier - golden honey, apricot and a hint of vanilla and nutmeg. Coming soon.

The white and rosé will be in the webshop, tastings and pizza nights from later this month.

As ever, all are zero sulphites, zero additions, zero fining/filtration.

Thanks for the 💪 .business .b Jon and Gary!

Regeneration.

What grows back once the chickens have been rotated is endlessly complex, mysterious and surprising.

That’s what regeneration ought to look and feel like.

Vintage.

The wildflower meadow to the left is 2025 vintage.

The wildflower to the right is 2021 vintage.

Believe it or not, the latter looked like the former when it was one year old.

We now have 9 acres of wildflower meadow around and through the vineyard. That has contributed to us quadrupling biodiversity here over the last years, according to the Natural England Biodiversity Metric.

We have vintages of wine AND we have vintages of wildflowers.

Phoenix.

After mourning the losses in the frosts, the rejuvenation is equally and oppositely uplifting.

They’re back!

We may have lost a month, but I still feel unprepared. Mowing and spraying must recommence before the humidity rolls in…

I have a feeling this could be a good year…against the odds. Let’s see.
