J M Parker Physiotherapy

J M Parker Physiotherapy Professional Physiotherapy Service delivered by an ACPAT Chartered Physiotherapist across Cumbria, Yorkshire & North Lancashire.

Physiotherapy, be it for people or animals aims to restore and maintain mobility, function, independence and performance. As a Chartered physiotherapist these are the core principles of my practice with the overall aim being to ensure optimal rehabilitation and return to function. I qualified with an MSc in Veterinary physiotherapy from the University of Liverpool in 2015 having been qualified as

a human physiotherapist for several years. Originating from a rural background I have been around animals all my life. I have been a keen horse rider for as long as I can remember and during my younger years competed regularly in show jumping. Nowadays I enjoy carriage driving and aim to compete in driving trials with my youngster. I am able to combine the knowledge and experience I have gained over the years with technical training to identify problems in both people and animals. Additionally I am able to draw on both my human & animal physiotherapy skills to provide comprehensive rehabilitation for both horse and rider, ensuring optimal performance. I firmly believe in a multi-disciplinary approach to rehabilitation and work collaboratively with vets and other professionals to ensure optimal outcomes are achieved.

A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to attend the Horses Inside Out Conference, where the theme was soundness and symmetry and the role they play in keeping horses sound in the long-term.

The practical day started with a brilliant demo from Ros Canter. Watching such a skilled rider and trainer focus on the foundations was a reminder that getting the basics right matters. Such an impressive lady who's full steam ahead on the road to Badminton only 4 weeks after having her second baby!

One of the biggest take home messages for me was the importance of getting the basics right in training before moving on.

When the foundations are solid, everything else becomes easier for both horse and rider.

The simple straightforward formula:

Practice.
Reward.
Repeat.
And if in doubt, stop and go back a step - so often the answer to the problem is there.

Sometimes the most effective approach really is the simplest one.

Where did October go? Always a busy month with lots of end of season checks and rehab cases. Couldn't let the month go without a nod to one of the biggest highlights - seeing the hardwork and dedication of Izzy Mason pay off big time at HOYS. Congratulations again Team Mason!

"I didn't think it'd be like this" - the most common thing I hear when I'm working with clients who have horses on rehabilitation.

Rehab is hard. There are no quick fixes. Itโ€™s often a long road of small steps, setbacks, and progress that doesnโ€™t always feel obvious in the moment.

It can feel isolating, like youโ€™re the only one going through it. But I can assure you, youโ€™re not alone. We've all been there at some point and will probably end up there again in the future. Just one of the many joys of owning horses!

The thing to remember is, small steps and little wins add up. With the right support and guidance, together with a good dose of patience and tenacity, the journey most often leads to better comfort, mobility, and quality of life for your horse. In part, that's why it's so difficult - it's not just healing damaged tissues, it's restoring as near normal function as possible.

So, donโ€™t despair. Make sure youโ€™ve got a good professional team around you, and donโ€™t be afraid to lean on us - thatโ€™s exactly what weโ€™re here for.

For all my clients on the rehab rollercoaster at the moment and for anyone else juggling your horse's rehab programme as well as everyday life - keep going, you've got this!
