Did you know that although asbestos was banned in the UK in 1999, around 5,000 people still die each year from asbestos-related diseases?

Guidance from the HSE continues to highlight that asbestos remains present in many buildings, making the risk very real, particularly for those working on or around them.

Understanding where asbestos may be found and how to manage it safely is an important part of effective health and safety management.

Our upcoming Academy session on Friday, 17 April, will cover:
• Why asbestos is dangerous and where it can be found
• What actions to take depending on your role

This 30-minute bite-sized session is for:
• Building owners and landlords
• Those maintaining or repairing buildings
• Employers of anyone likely to disturb asbestos
• Workers

A practical session focused on building awareness and supporting safe decision-making.

7 million working days were lost to work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) - according to the Health and Safety Executive’s Health and Safety Statistics 2024/25.

In fact, MSDs remain one of the most common causes of work-related ill health in Great Britain.

They most often affect the:
• Lower back
• Neck and shoulders
• Arms and wrists
• Hips and knees

Often developing gradually through manual handling, repetitive work or sustained postures, MSD risks can be reduced with the right understanding and practical controls.

Our upcoming 30-minute Academy session: Musculoskeletal Disorders will cover:
• The causes of MSDs
• The body areas most at risk
• How to manage the risk effectively

Does your safety process improve how work is done - or just tick boxes?

The Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle is a simple framework for
PLAN - planning work,
DO - carrying it out,
CHECK - checking how it went
ACT - and improving next time.

In Health and Safety, PDCA helps:-
✔️ connect systems and processes with real work and behaviour
✔️ support continuous improvement rather than one-off fixes
✔️ underpins ISO 45001 and the design and implementation of effective safety management systems.

If you'd like to know more, join our Academy session this Friday to explore how PDCA can be applied in practice to your health and safety process.

What should trigger a risk assessment?

If you employ 5 or more people, you are required to conduct documented risk assessments.

But compliance shouldn’t be the only trigger.

Risk assessments are most useful when they’re prompted by change, such as:
📋 New or modified work activities
🪜 New equipment or substances
👷‍♀️ Changes in roles, staffing or supervision
❗ Incidents, near misses or emerging trends

Understanding when to review risk is just as important as knowing how; as is monitoring the control measures in the risk assessment to ensure they are suitable, sufficient, and working as they should.

Markets today aren’t unstable sometimes - they’re unstable by design.

This Fortune.com article highlights how price shocks, policy swings and workforce shortages are now permanent features of doing business, and why rate cuts alone won’t fix unpredictability.

"In a high-volatility, low-growth world leaders who win are the ones who can engineer predictability..."

And one of the paths to predictability? A strong, real-time Business Continuity Plan (BCP).

👉 If you’re looking to turn BCP into a competitive advantage, join our Academy session on how to make BCP real-time and live next Friday: https://buff.ly/gZzC4f8
