F I E L D N O T E S 🍁

It's hard to believe we're already a month into bat survey season!

We’ve got a busy summer ahead of us and are so grateful to be working with an amazing team of Ecologists and sub-contractor Surveyors.

On one of our surveys the team were lucky enough to see... a curious goat! You never know what you're going to see when out surveying.

Have you spotted anything weird or wonderful on your surveys so far this season?

Apparently Senior Ecologist Libby's garden is the equivalent to Friday night at Popworld for Stag beetles now! There were four males one evening, the biggest was 9cm long. "It didn’t seem like the girls got the memo but one did show up the next day, must’ve been running late polishing her wings!"

When the tree was cut down by the previous resident, they left all the logs at the bottom. They're now completely covered in soil and vegetation, which is the perfect habitat for Stag beetles.

Even the smallest gardens can support amazing biodiversity. Plant a few wildflowers, leave a corner a little untidy, or put out fresh water to help local wildlife thrive, especially in this heat! Every small action makes a difference.

Enjoy your garden this weekend!

Happy World Otter Day! Otters are making a comeback in the UK, so why not head to your local otter hotspot (https://www.wildlifetrusts.org/where_to_see_otters) to celebrate these magnificent mustelids 🦦🐟🦪

🌳 We're so pleased to share that our Ecologists Nathan and Tristan have recently passed their Tree Climbing and Aerial Rescue Course!

They had an enjoyable week with Roland Heming down in sunny Dorset, learning the theory, safety, knots, ascent/descent and rescue procedures.

We’re delighted to be adding more qualified climbers to the team, to support our work inspecting trees potentially suitable for roosting bats 👏

🐭 Team Training Day

Our teams came together in our South East office last week for a pre-season get together and training day.

Rebecca started the day with training on Dormouse Ecology and Consultancy which included a classroom session and a trip to local woodland where we were able to identify suitable habitat for dormice.

Neil hosted a session on Bat Call ID, refreshing our knowledge of identifying bat species from their calls, which are recorded by our detectors during surveys.

We ended the day with a how-to session on Coreo, a useful software tool which we're increasingly using on site to record our findings.

Scroll for a treat at the end - Rebecca's homemade chocolate bat truffles! 🤤

🌍 Earth Day 2026 🌏

The theme for this Earth Day is 'Our Power, Our Planet™', focusing on individual actions to protect the places we live and love. Today, and everyday, we are championing the small wins, the little things we can do to enhance nature in our local areas. Here are a few of our ideas:

🌿 Plant native species in your garden to support local pollinators. This can include window boxes if you don't have outdoor space!
💧 Create a micro-pond - you don't need a huge pond to make a difference! A shallow dish with stones can be enough to help bees, butterflies and birds.
🌱 Leave areas of grass long or create a wildflower meadow - a low-maintenance option to attract pollinating insects and other wildlife.

🦇 International Bat Appreciation Day 🦇

Across our projects, we work to ensure that bats and humans can thrive together. We do this through creating safe places for bats to roost, whether that's through designing bespoke features on a new roof, installing bat boxes or encouraging our clients to create bat-friendly gardens with plenty of foraging opportunities 🪰

Bats are key indicators of biodiversity health across the UK, when their populations decline this is often a sign of a wider environmental issues.

The countdown is now on until the bat survey season begins in May, when our teams will be out monitoring bat activity at dusk and into the night, until the end of September.

Can you ID these 4 of our 18 UK bat species? Comment below and we'll let you know!

Our South West and Bristol teams joined forces recently to volunteer at the Dorset Hedgehog Rescue Centre! 🦔 It was a great opportunity to come together for some team building before our busy survey season starts.

We helped to build walk-in runs and individual pens for the new soft release area. The rescue team will place inexperienced juveniles in the pens before they are released to the wild.

We were also given a tour of the facilities to learn about the Dorset Hedgehog Rescue Team's important work with our native hedgehogs.

Huge thanks to the Dorset Hedgehog Rescue Team for the inspiring work you do 🦔💚

P.S. A gentle reminder to keep an eye out for hedgehogs in your garden if you are planning on doing some gardening this bank holiday weekend! Lots of the rescued hedgehogs had suffered painful strimmer injuries.
