In 1998 in my Record of Achievement (don’t forget kids of the 90’s: ‘You won’t get employed without it!’ 😆) I wrote that, apart from being a rock ‘n’ roll star, ‘perhaps I’d like to build websites someday’.

Well, I’m sure my past self would be supremely chuffed for winning Society of Independent Brewers Business Award with Hackney Church Brew Co. for the UK’s Best Independent Brewery Webshop 🤘🏆

That website was an absolute labour of love, hard work, head scratching and - as my dad Paul Law always says - ‘if a job’s worth doing, it worth doing properly!’.

I am now officially an award winning website designer… amongst many (probably too many 🤦🏻‍♂️😂) other things.

I’ve been working with for the last few years (lovely bunch of folk ☺️) with their design work. Recently, we’ve started mixing things up a bit on their non-core-range beers.

Here’s a few early examples but keep a close eye out for the new ones, like the rebranded Pansori, as (IMHO) they look boss! 👀🙌

EPISODE 200: Return of the Fat Jedi
[with Damian Doherty from Emperor's Brewery]

And along with it some news 😔

After 7 years of conversations with craft brewers and visits to some incredible breweries, I’ve decided it’s finally time to call time at the bar on the Hop Forward Podcast.

When I set out to do the show, I wasn’t sure if anyone would even listen. And, if they did, I thought they’d call me out as a fraud: ‘What do you know about making beer and running a brewery…?!’

In my quest to help both myself and others get ahead in the brewing and beer business, I’ve had some AMAZING opportunities to speak to and learn from some of the industry’s best talent. More-so, I’ve met a lot of people on the journey who I now consider friends for life 🙏

It’s a decision I’ve laboured over for a long time… should I, shouldn’t I? But in many ways, I’ve achieved what I set out to do: I’ve helped people on their brewing business journey whilst traversing mine. My kids are growing up (fast), I’ve finally got a better brew space of my own (with a decent floor!) and I’m involved with some great breweries and projects.

My wife says, ‘Never say never!’ so, who knows, maybe the show will be back in some way, shape or form? 🤷🏻‍♂️ But for now, it’s time, Frodo Baggins, to go into the Undying Lands and do some other things.

Like a good pub crawl, all good things come to an end. BUT, not without a big boozy Imperial Stout sized episode to round off the proceedings before staggering home into the sunset.

For this final episode (until Disney reboot the show), I’m joined by the Emperor himself, Damian Doherty from Emperor’s Brewery in The Fat Jedi (aka Damian's truly intergalactic beer cellar!) to chat all things Imperial Stouts, Porters and Barley Wines.

We reminisce about the rise of craft beer, what has changed over the past 10-15 years, how to brew a truly great high-gravity beer, and Damian is put through his paces to see whether he truly is a Jedi or is as mediocre as an Untappd score (“0.5/5 - Don’t like Barley Wines!”).

Finally, all there is left to say is a BIG THANKS to those who have tuned into the show, said encouraging things or put their money where their mouth is and supported the podcast financially. There’s a list of suppliers too big to name but Crisp Malt and Charles Faram & Co Ltd have been staples for years, still lending their support after all this time.

And, if I don’t see you:
Good afternoon.
Good evening.
And good night.

NEW EPISODE ✨ SERIES 6 · EPISODE 199
CAN YOU REUSE DRY HOPS? with Garage Project's Pete Gillespie
🎧 https://hopforward.beer/episodes/garage-project-sludgefest/

On the Hop Forward Podcast this week, we head to Wellington, New Zealand, by the magic of the internet to sit down digitally with Pete Gillespie, co-founder of Garage Project, for a deep dive into one of the most unusual hop-forward beers you’re likely to come across: Sludgefest — a Radical Recycled Hop IPA brewed using reused dry-hop slurry.

We discuss this unusual beer, how it tastes and the approach Garage Project takes towards creativity and experimentation on their beers, while keeping a consistent core range available to the average supermarket drinker.

We also talk about their pickle beer (yes, you read that right!), their wild fermentation programme and how craft beer is considered ‘nostalgic’ to Gen Z - the beers their mums and dads kept in the fridge.

Nick is also joined this week by Will Rogers from Charles Faram, discussing the 2025’s hop harvest, what to expect from this year’s crop and how fresh isn’t always ‘best’.

THIS WEEK'S EPISODE IS PROUDLY BROUGHT TO YOU BY:

NEW HOP FORWARD PODCAST EPISODE ✨
Season 6 · Episode 198
📻 TUNE IN https://bit.ly/3XSxYtR

Recently, I visited Welbeck Abbey Brewery and had a good old chat with Claire Monk about all things cask ale, building a brand and marketing around a tourist attraction, as well as how people leaving hospitality is effecting the pub industry as a whole and finding new employees.

I also chat with David Griggs from Crisp Malt about malt consistency.

Went to visit Welbeck Abbey Brewery today to record a podcast with Claire Monk, chief biscuit collector (or whatever title it was she gave herself 😅).

I’ve visited a lot of breweries over the years and I must confess, the welcome and hospitality I received from the team was nothing short of excellent 👌

Can’t wait to put this episode out. Stay tuned, should drop the week at the next.

As we approach episode 200, the Hop Forward Podcast this week explores why agricultural research is imperative for the future of brewing.

Specifically looking at hops, we host a round table discussion with Will Rogers from Charles Faram & Co Ltd, Duncan Westbury - Dean of Land and Property Management at the Royal Agricultural University and Scientific Researcher, Josh Brett, to answer this question.

On the Hop Forward Podcast this week, Nick sits down with Dean & Jill Baker, the husband-and-wife team behind Baker's Dozen Brewing Co.

Based in Rutland, the smallest county in the UK, the Bakers have built a lifestyle business from scratch — just the two of them — while balancing the headaches of running a brewery while keeping their relationship sweet.

Once landlords of The Jolly Brewer in Stamford, the Bakers share how they cleared out the drug dealers and bad curtains from their pub and turning it into one of the market-town's favourite public houses, before tiring of being landlords and exchanging and beer-engines for mash paddles.

Over the course of this conversation, we dig into what it really takes to run a two-person brewery, how they've won national awards like SIBA Golds for Undertow and Bull Run despite being small, and share their insights on running a marriage and a business together.

Nick also shares his views on how bucket hats have brought more people out drinking this summer. Also, stick around right to the very end as Dean & Jill contend with what their correct email address is...!

Recorded a podcast today with Jill and Dean from in Ketton, Rutland. Absolutely lovely couple making some mighty fine beer! Definitely a hidden gem amongst British beer 🍻

We covered all manner of things from running a pub, the echo-chamber of beer geekery, bucket hats and much more…! Really looking forward to publishing this episode.

Stay tuned - should (should!🤞) be out next week all going well, along with a great discussion with on some exciting research projects.

If you tuned into the most recent episode of the Hop Forward Podcast, you'll have heard Jason from Broadtown Brewery talking about the jouney they've been on and the work we've done for them.

I'm always amazed at how far they've come from brewing on a 500L Braumeister in an old coach house to now running a 10BBL brewhouse and a string of venues under their belt, with no signs of slowing down.

The branding has evolved too! We gave the core range a refresher recently, ushering in a new period for BTB, as well as continuing to explore modern, contemporary designs on their 'craft' offerings.
