We kicked off Monday the right way yesterday at our Sheffield office! 🌮🎉

Nothing brings a team together quite like great food, good conversation, and a chance to catch up away from our desks. This afternoon, the team enjoyed a fantastic spread of authentic Mexican tacos and loaded nachos, courtesy of the amazing Urban Cuisines Taco Truck.

A big thank you to Urban Cuisine for helping us start the week with incredible flavours and plenty of smiles. It's moments like these that strengthen connections, boost morale, and make our workplace such a great place to be.

🔍 Welcome to Blue Chip’s new “Did You Know?” series! We’re bringing you bite-sized facts about Passive Fire Protection—insightful, quick, and easy to digest.

🔍Did You Know? Passive fire protection systems are built into a structure and work without human intervention or power. Features such as fire-resistant walls, floors, doors, and intumescent coatings can contain a fire for hours—giving occupants more time to evacuate and firefighters more time to respond, while helping prevent a local fire from spreading throughout an entire building.

🔥 Industry Update: New Passive Fire Protection CPD Launched for Refurbishment & Change of Use Projects

As refurbishment, renovation, and building repurposing projects continue to grow across the UK, fire safety compliance remains a critical priority for construction professionals.

Passive fire protection specialist Promat has launched a new Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme designed to help architects, fire engineers, contractors, and project teams navigate the complex fire safety challenges associated with refurbishment and change of use projects.

The CPD addresses key industry concerns including:

✅ Fire safety compliance under Part B of the Building Regulations
✅ Structural fire protection for steel, concrete, and timber-framed buildings
✅ Effective compartmentation strategies to support fire containment and safe evacuation
✅ Managing challenges in listed buildings and older structures
✅ Addressing gaps between standard fire testing and real-world building conditions
✅ Solutions for complex refurbishment scenarios, including timber-to-steel interfaces and heritage building constraints

With increasing regulatory scrutiny and a growing focus on sustainable building practices through renovation rather than new-build construction, specialist knowledge in passive fire protection has never been more important.

Commenting on the launch, Promat UK Commercial Director Joshua Slack highlighted the increasing demand for fire safety expertise as the industry adapts to evolving regulations and the continued growth of refurbishment projects.

This new CPD aims to equip construction professionals with the knowledge and practical solutions needed to ensure fire safety remains at the forefront of every renovation and change of use project.

🔥 MYTH vs FACT: Fire Door Surveys 🔥

❌ MYTH: One fire door survey is enough to keep a building compliant.

✅ FACT: Fire door surveys need to be carried out regularly. Doors can degrade over time, and issues like damaged seals, poor gaps, or faulty hardware can go unnoticed without routine checks. 🚪🛡️

🔍🚪 Fire Door Surveys: Essential for Passive Fire Protection 🔥

Regular fire door surveys ensure that doors perform as intended in a fire—maintaining compartmentation, protecting escape routes, and meeting legal compliance.

A thorough survey checks:
• Door leaf condition
• Intumescent seals
• Closers & hinges
• Gaps & alignment
• Certification & signage
Stay compliant, stay safe—schedule routine fire door inspections.

🚪🔥 Fire Door Installation: A Critical Line of Defense 🔥🚪

Properly installed fire doors are essential in passive fire protection. They compartmentalize buildings, slow fire and smoke spread, and protect escape routes. Key benefits include:

• Life safety & code compliance
• Integrity under heat & pressure
• Smoke control for safe evacuation

Correct installation is just as important as the door itself. Always use certified systems and trained professionals.

🔥 MYTH vs FACT: Passive Fire Protection 🔥

❌ MYTH: If a building looks undamaged, its fire protection systems must still be effective.

✅ FACT: Passive fire protection can be compromised by small changes like unsealed cable openings, damaged fire doors, or poor installation — often without visible signs. Regular inspections and maintenance are essential. 🔍🛡️
