This role is ideal for someone with experience in door and window fitting, repairs, hinges, hardware, multipoint mechanisms, adjustments, realignment and fault finding.

Salary: £30,000–£40,000

The hinges on this door in Bradway had worn to the point where they weren’t holding the door properly anymore.

So we checked how the door was sitting, took the old hinges off and fitted new ones.

Once they were in, the door was brought back into position and tested properly.

No need to replace the whole door.
The hinges were the problem, so that’s what we fixed.

The safest homes are usually the boring ones.

The door closes properly.
The windows shut without a fight.
The lights come on when they’re supposed to.
You know who has keys.
The side gate actually gets locked.

Nothing dramatic. Nothing clever.

Just a property where things work the way you expect them to.

That’s really what good security looks like.

The problems usually start when little changes become normal.

You start pulling the door towards you to get it locked.
A window needs a shove.
The security light works… most of the time.
A camera gets nudged slightly out of position.
An old key is still floating around somewhere.

You live with it because it still sort of works.

But once security starts relying on little tricks, habits or luck, it’s worth having a proper look at what’s changed.

And that doesn’t automatically mean replacing everything.

Sometimes it’s an adjustment.
Sometimes it’s a repair.
Sometimes it’s simply changing the way something is being used.

The aim is just to get everything back to doing its job properly.

Bifold doors can be a pain once they start moving out of line.

On this Norton job, the four-leaf set had shifted enough that the doors weren’t closing properly as a set.

We checked each section, worked out where the alignment had gone off, then brought the doors back into position and tested the whole run properly.

No new doors. No unnecessary replacement.

Just the existing set realigned so it could meet, close and work the way it should again.

If you have to pull the door in, lift the handle harder or give it a shove before it locks properly, the door is telling you something.

And it might not be the lock.

A door can drop a few millimetres and that can be enough to throw the locking points out of line. Once that happens, the mechanism starts working harder every time you lock it.

Then we compensate.

Pull it towards you.
Lift the handle a bit harder.
Push the door while you turn the key.

It works, so you carry on.

The problem is, all that extra force has to go somewhere - into the handle, hinges, gearbox and locking mechanism.

That’s how one worn part can start putting strain on the rest.

Sometimes the lock itself is absolutely fine. The real issue is worn hinges, loose hardware or the door simply not sitting where it should anymore.

Catch it early and the repair can be much simpler.

If your door has become harder to close, lock or operate than it used to be, it’s worth getting it checked before something eventually gives up.

This one was pretty clear once we got a proper look at it.

The hinges cracked and wasn’t supporting the door properly anymore.

We checked the failed hinges and the fixing area, fitted the replacements, then brought the door back into position and checked everything was sitting and working as it should.

No drama. Just failed parts that needed sorting before it started causing more problems elsewhere on the door.

Sometimes there isn’t a neat way in.

On this Meadowhead job, the existing cylinder couldn’t be operated normally, so destructive entry was needed before we could get the door sorted properly.

Once access was gained, the damaged cylinder came out and we matched a suitable replacement for the door.

New cylinder fitted.
Door checked.
Lock tested.
Everything working as it should again.

Not every lock problem needs a big complicated repair. Sometimes it’s simply about getting access safely, replacing the failed part and making sure the door is working properly before we leave.

A lot of home security comes down to this:

You hope the doors are fine.
You hope the windows are secure.
You hope the camera is covering the right area.
You hope nobody still has an old key.

And most of the time, you probably don’t think much more about it.

That’s normal. But it’s also how little problems get missed.

A door starts catching slightly.
A window doesn’t quite pull into the frame anymore.
A side gate gets left open more often than it should.
A camera shifts and nobody notices.

None of it looks particularly serious on its own.

That’s the difference between hoping and actually checking.

A proper security check isn’t about walking around your home looking for things to sell you. It’s about seeing what’s there, what’s working, what isn’t, and whether anything needs sorting.

Sometimes something needs replacing.

Sometimes it just needs adjusting.
