🌍 UN Women’s Call to Action: Flexibility Is Essential for Gender Equality

The incredible work of UN Women continues to shine a light on the structural barriers women face in the workplace—especially around unpaid care and rigid work models.

Their message is clear:

“Flexible work is not a luxury—it is a necessity. For millions of women balancing paid work and unpaid care, it is the difference between staying in the workforce or stepping out. Employers must treat flexibility as a core equity strategy, not a side benefit.”

This quote captures the urgency of rethinking how we design work. It’s not just about convenience—it’s about retention, equity, and dignity.
📊 Headlines from their latest findings:

Women perform 3x more unpaid care work than men
52% say flexible work helps them stay employed
45% of women reconsidering their jobs cite lack of flexibility

đź’ˇ One solution? Job sharing.

It enables career continuity, supports caregivers, and opens leadership pathways to those who need flexibility.

Gender equality is now a top global concern for Gen Z and Millennials, but most say they don’t know how to support it. Discover three ways to take action at home, at work, and online.

Despite progress, women continue to shoulder a disproportionate share of unpaid care work and face significant barriers to full-time employment. The OECD’s latest findings underscore how these dynamics contribute to the gender pay gap across member countries.

You can read the report here - https://www.oecd.org/en/publications/gender-gaps-in-paid-and-unpaid-work-persist_25a6c5dc-en/full-report.html -d1e86

đź’ˇ One solution that deserves more attention? Job sharing.

Job sharing—where two professionals share the responsibilities and compensation of one full-time role—can:
âś… Enable more women to stay in or return to the workforce
âś… Support career progression while balancing caregiving responsibilities
âś… Reduce the penalty often associated with part-time work
âś… Foster inclusive leadership pipelines

It’s time to rethink how we structure work. Flexible models like job sharing don’t just benefit individuals—they strengthen organisations by retaining talent, increasing diversity, and improving wellbeing.

Let’s move beyond awareness to action. How is your organisation embracing flexible work to close the gender pay gap?

This policy brief summarises key findings on gender gaps in paid and unpaid work, from the OECD report Gender Equality in a Changing World: Taking Stock and Moving Forward, identifying relevant social, economic and institutional factors preventing gender equality. It closes with relevant policy opti...

Coaching That Makes a Difference — Just Ask Our Clients

Did you know we offer a range of services to support individuals and organisations — including coaching?

We’ve just wrapped up a fantastic coaching programme with the inspirational Co-CEOs of Sheffield Young Carers, who are pioneering a powerful jobshare leadership model focused on succession and skills-sharing.

Here’s what they had to say about their experience 👇

"Jobshare Works have supported us to explore and review the first year of our job-share CEO role. The coaching has been extremely beneficial, allowing space to reflect on our individual and shared strengths and in particular on the values that drive us to deliver a high-quality service. Both coaches have drawn out some key learning points and increased our awareness of the power of the job-share as well as helped us address any gaps or concerns.

We would recommend Jobshare Works wholeheartedly"

If you’re curious about how coaching could support your growth, leadership, or team dynamics — we’d love to chat.

🌟 Part 8 of Jobshare Works Q&As🌟

This week's question - What are the downsides of jobsharing?

We’re huge advocates for job sharing — the benefits are incredible. But like any working model, it comes with its challenges. And being honest about those is key to making it work.

🔹 Communication overload
Managing emails, updates, and documents can feel overwhelming. But with clear systems, shared responsibilities, and even a little help from AI, it becomes manageable — and even empowering.

🔹 Always catching up?
Especially for those starting midweek, it can feel like you’re jumping onto a moving train. Building in catch-up time and supporting each other’s re-entry into the week makes a huge difference.

🔹 Loss of identity?
We worried about this — but found the opposite. We’re known as a strong team and as individuals with unique strengths. (And yes, we sometimes get called each other’s names — we take it as a compliment!)

🔹 Trailblazing fatigue
Sometimes it feels like we’re constantly creating new ways of working. But that’s also the opportunity: to shape better, more inclusive systems for everyone.

Job sharing isn’t always easy — but it’s absolutely worth it. And with the right mindset and support, the challenges become stepping stones to something better.

🌬️ The Joy of Missing Out: Making Space for What Matters 🌿

As mentioned in our last post, in our job share, we’ve discovered something powerful:
Missing out can be a gift.

Through job sharing, we’ve found room to think more clearly and live more fully.

✨ We miss out on:

The pressure to always be available
The guilt of stepping away
The burnout from doing it all

đź’š And we gain:

Time to think deeply and work meaningfully
Space to rest, recharge, and reconnect
A rhythm that supports both ambition and wellbeing

Job sharing isn’t about stepping back — it’s about stepping into a more balanced, intentional way of working.

Here’s to the joy of missing out — and the clarity it brings.

🌟 Part 5 of Jobshare Works Q&As🌟

This week - 'How do we apply for a role as a jobshare?'

06/06/2025

🌟 Part 7 of Jobshare Works Q&As🌟

This week's question - Can anyone jobshare?

In theory yes, but you have to have the right skills to make it work. It is critical to build trust, be open to collaboration and embrace co-owning outcomes together.

Key skills and characteristics for being a good jobshare candidate:
đź’Ş Strong communication skills
đź‘‹ Willingness to let go of things, sharing the good and bad
🥳 Embracing the JOMO (joy of missing out) and avoiding FOMO (fear of missing out)
đź“… Disciplined and organised
đź’ Self-awareness, and building on a foundation of trust

Key questions to ask yourself:
âť“ Do you like working with others?
âť“ Do you communicate well and build trust with others?
âť“ Are you comfortable in co-owning outcomes and sharing any successes and challenges?

If you have answered yes to the above, then jobsharing could be a really good option for you.

🌟 Jobshare Works Q&As - Part 6🌟

Today's question - 'How do you approach performance reviews as a Jobshare?'

Check out the response below 👇

Our top tips:

✔️ 1. Reflect on shared objectives and outcomes for the role; how far have these been met - keeping focused on outcomes and initial objectives
đź’Ş 2. What have your individual contributions been? Use one another to help identify these too
🌱 3. Consider development opportunities, what development do you need as a pair and as individuals
📝 4. Agreeing a clear process and expectations with your line manager, to get the best out of the conversation

Performance reviews can be such a powerful use of the collective jobshare superpower, to help you reflect as individuals and a pair and shape up some ambitious plans and objectives for the year ahead

Happy International HR Day 2025, celebrating the impact HR professionals play in helping their organisation's to thrive.

At Jobshare Works we've been lucky enough to collaborate with some amazing HR professionals whose work has supported teams to flourish, talent to develop and businesses to innovate and succeed.

This year's theme is HumanifyAI, with 92% of companies planning to increase AI investments in the near future, it's timely for a focus on where human interaction adds value and meaning that isn't possible with AI alone.

This was a key feature of our chat recently with Nick DeCourcey and Therman Trotman on their Business Boost podcast.

🤖 We talked lessons for human-AI collaboration – Interestingly, some of the principles that make jobsharing effective also apply to working with AI:

đź’Ş Know your strengths and where you need support
đź’ Rethink how roles and responsibilities are designed
⚖️ Set clear expectations and boundaries

But here’s the key difference: while AI can enhance productivity, it can’t replicate the depth of learning, creativity, and growth that comes from two (or more) people working together.

What do you think?

It was a real pleasure being on the Business Boost Podcast with Nick DeCourcy and Therman Trotman. Thanks so much for having us. Really great to share the power of all things jobsharing over the Atlantic but also incredibly interesting to reflect on how technology supports effective jobsharing and a...
