When we decide on a cleaning product for a gravestone or headstone several factors are considered. These include: The type of stone, for example: Marble, Limestone, Granite, Sandstone, Slate, etc. The reason why it is important to choose the right product is because using the wrong product can cause major damage to your headstone. Using the wrong product could cause staining on certain materials and it can even create hairline cracks, which later turn into major problems when rainwater and moisture entering the stone then develop into large cracks and breaks. Another important factor is to determine the type of soiling on the surface of the headstone so that the most effective cleaning solution can be used.
For example: Organic - algae, lichens, mosses, fungi.
Urban - general grime, dirt, bird droppings, sap, grease.
Carbonaceous - sooty contamination and soiling.
Efflorescence - white salt deposits.
Stains - metallic, oils, etc.
