Whether you're funding a project with a grant or your own cash, the delivery principles stay the same.

We've been part of dozens of projects, some grant-funded, some not. The ones that succeed? They all follow these five things:

✅ Start with outcomes, not features. You want fewer errors and faster fulfilment, not just a fancy new system.

✅ Keep your first phase small to prove value. Big bang implementations rarely work. Small wins build momentum and trust.

✅ Assign a clear owner inside your business. Someone needs to drive this forward. Without accountability, projects drift.

✅ Plan training and change management early. Your team won't adopt a new system if they're not ready. Start conversations from day one.

✅ Measure impact for both your benefit and grant reporting. Track what matters: time saved, errors reduced, revenue gained. It's proof that the investment worked.

The funding source matters less than the approach. Get these five things right, and you're already ahead of most projects we see.

Four Grant-Friendly Areas That Deliver Real Results

Not all tech upgrades are created equal. When you're using a grant to modernise your business, focus on areas that actually move the needle.

1. Fix Your Workflows First
Before you buy new tools, map out where your processes are broken. Duplicated data, slow approvals, and shadow spreadsheets are the real bottlenecks. Clarity here strengthens your grant application and boosts success.

2. Automate the Boring Admin
Small automation wins add up fast: auto-invoicing from orders, syncing stock levels, streamlining approvals, automating onboarding. Even simple dashboards replacing weekly spreadsheet reports save hours and cut costly mistakes.

3. Improve Reporting Visibility
Most SMEs don't need complex analytics just answers to everyday questions: What's our margin by product? What's in stock? Which customers are most profitable? A grant-funded reporting upgrade leads to better decisions, fast.

4. Upgrade Systems That Block Growth
Too much manual work. Slow onboarding. No single source of truth. Upgrading your ERP, CRM, or process design resolves these quickly and unlocks scalability.

These four areas deliver measurable ROI and make the strongest case for grant funding. Which one is holding your business back?

I've just written a guide breaking down the grants landscape: what's available, who qualifies, and how to apply. It's designed for business owners who want to work smarter without breaking the bank.

Mapped your workflow? Great.

Now comes the important bit: finding the right systems to support it.

Too many businesses jump straight to a new ERP or CRM without understanding what they actually need. They end up with expensive software that doesn't fit their processes, or worse, they're back to square one with a different set of problems.

Here's what we've learned from hundreds of implementations:

The best system isn't always the fanciest or most expensive. It's the one that matches how your business actually works.

Once you've mapped your process and identified the pain points, you can start evaluating options that genuinely solve your problems. Not features you'll never use. Not tools that create more admin. Just the right fit.

Then comes the real magic: putting systems in place that work together. No more data silos. No more manual re-keying. No more firefighting.

The result? Time saved. Money saved. Real visibility. And the breathing room to focus on growth instead of just keeping the lights on.

If you've mapped your workflow and you're ready to explore what's next, let's talk. No pressure, just practical advice on what might work for your business.

Before you add another tool, hire another person, or buy new software. Stop!

The most expensive mistake growing businesses make is improving or scaling systems they don't fully understand.

You can't fix what you can't see.

That's why mapping your processes before making any changes is non-negotiable. It's the difference between:
• Making smart improvements vs. throwing money at problems
• Automating the right things vs. automating broken processes
• Scaling efficiently vs. scaling chaos

When you map your processes, you get clarity on:
• How work actually flows (not how you think it flows)
• Where the real bottlenecks are
• What's costing you time and money
• What tools you actually need (and which ones you don't)

I've just written a practical guide on exactly how to do this, no fancy tools needed, just clarity.

The blog covers:
• How to pick the right process to map
• Why you need the team doing the work in the room
• How to build a flowchart together (live)
• How to spot pain points that actually matter
• What to do after you've mapped it

From Page 4 to Page 1: How to build a Website That Works While You Sleep

This is the kind of project we love working on.

A client came to us wanting visibility; they needed new enquiries. But as we talked through their vision, something bigger emerged. They didn't just want a website. They wanted a system that could process orders automatically, even at 3am. And eventually, they wanted to expand to Europe and the States.

So here's what we did:

**Phase 1: SEO & Content**
While our developers worked on the new design, we ran an SEO audit and started posting weekly blogs. The results? Their website climbed from page 4 to page 1 on Google completely organically. 37.9K impressions. 355 clicks. All without paid ads.

**Phase 2: The Redesign**
In the background, our team built a fresh new design with order processing built in. We worked with local talent, had weekly catchups with the client, and made sure every design decision, every line of copy, every feature aligned with their vision.

**The Result:**
A website that doesn't just look good. It works for them. It generates leads. It processes orders while they sleep. And it's built to scale across new markets.

This is what happens when you combine strategy, design, and the right technical foundation. It's not quick. But it makes a real difference to how the business grows.

If you've got a vision like this, something that'll transform how your business operates, let's talk about it.

Your free website might be costing you more than you think.

Here's what I see all the time: business owners launch a free website, thinking they've ticked the box. But then they realise it's not pulling in leads. It's slow. It doesn't look professional. And they can't customise it the way they need to.

The numbers are stark: DIY websites perform up to 4x worse than professionally built ones.

Why? Because a good website isn't just about looks. It's built on dosens of small details:

- Layout and messaging that guides people to take action
- Mobile usability (because most people browse on phones)
- Image optimisation and proper SEO setup
- Technical structure that keeps things fast and stable
- Tracking and measurement so you know what's working

Free builders make those details harder, not easier.

And here's the hidden cost nobody talks about: your time. Hours spent tweaking templates, fighting with layouts, rewriting sections. That's time you could be serving clients, following up leads, or building partnerships.

A proper website changes the game. You can connect it to your CRM, set up automated workflows, and suddenly you're saving 7+ hours per week while your site pulls in consistent inbound leads.

Want to dive deeper? Read the full blog post for a complete breakdown of what's really costing you and how to fix it.

Is your CRM just a fancy contact list?

A CRM without a lead engine is like buying a warehouse and never stocking it. Everything looks neat… but nothing moves.

Here’s why adding a lead engine could be the right option for you:

1️⃣ Predictable pipeline – Stop relying on referrals or inbound enquiries. Generate a steady flow of qualified prospects.

2️⃣ Better targeting – Filter by industry, role, company size… spend your time talking to the right people, not chasing ghosts.

3️⃣ Momentum in your CRM – Fresh leads keep your system alive. Dashboards reflect reality, not stale data.

If your CRM feels more like a graveyard than a growth engine, maybe it’s time to use a proper lead engine.

Happy to chat for 20 minutes to see what this could look like for you.

Your CRM isn't broken. It's missing a lead engine.

If your lead generation, enrichment, outreach, and follow-up live in separate tools (or worse, spreadsheets), you don't have a stack – you have disconnected jobs.

The result? Teams can't see what actually performs. Leads get duplicated. Reps build lists manually. And your CRM becomes a database you have to maintain, not a system that helps you win deals.

A modern lead generation platform that integrates tightly with your CRM fixes the real problem: it turns lead flow into a single, measurable system.

I've just written a detailed guide on how this works in practice – what improves in outbound, inbound, data enrichment, and deal ex*****on. Plus real metrics to measure it.

Read the full breakdown and see how to build a connected stack that actually drives revenue.

One year ago today, I registered NW ERP Ltd. I didn’t properly get going until a few months later, but it feels like the right moment to pause and reflect. With a slice of chocolate cake in hand.

When I started NW ERP, the goal was simple:

Help businesses save time, save money and create space to grow.

I do that using technology that actually makes sense to the people using it every day:

ERP – the system that runs your operations behind the scenes. Stock, purchasing, jobs, projects and finance. The engine room.

CRM – the system that manages your relationships. Enquiries, quotes, sales pipeline and customer history.

E-commerce – the systems that connect your website to your operations, so orders flow straight through instead of being re-keyed or chased.

Over the past year, I’ve been lucky enough to help some brilliant businesses tighten processes, reduce wasted effort and gain real visibility across their operations.

I also started this journey with something slightly bigger in mind. After 15 years working in tech, I wanted to help people more broadly, not just through systems and strategy, but through conversations, introductions, encouragement and shared experience.

"A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle" - James Keller

Some highlights from year one:

• Speaking at Sheffield City College for Digital Industry Day
• Sharing what I do on a multinational podcast
• Partnering with companies I genuinely believe in
• Joining the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and working closely with local businesses

Every conversation, referral and bit of trust has meant so much.

So...

Thank you for the conversations.
Thank you for the support.
Thank you for trusting me.

I’m genuinely excited to see what the future brings.
