Some of the hardest things to stop doing are the things you’re actually good at.

We’ve built successful services around content creation and executive recruitment. Clients valued them. The work was interesting. It made money.

But each required a different sales approach, different expertise and different ways of delivering.
Ultimately, they distracted us from where we wanted the business to go.

So we said no.

That decision created room to focus much more firmly on helping businesses build growth engines around HubSpot.

A service doesn’t have to fail before you stop offering it. Sometimes success simply isn’t a good enough reason to continue.

Netflix didn’t become Netflix by protecting the business model that made it successful. Moving from DVDs by post to streaming meant saying no to something customers valued and the company knew how to deliver.

That lesson matters just as much for smaller businesses. Profitable work can still create complexity, distract your team and pull attention away from where you can make the greatest difference.

Growth isn’t always about adding more. Sometimes it means deciding where you want to play, committing properly and letting somebody else handle the rest.

The question is: is what got you here still what will get you there?

Business leaders are often asked to contribute beyond their day job: charities, boards, community projects, trusteeships and countless requests for advice.

Many are worthwhile. That doesn’t mean you should say yes.

Even a supposedly ‘low-touch’ role carries responsibility. In smaller organisations especially, there may be less infrastructure behind you, meaning the commitment becomes considerably bigger than expected.

Eventually, too many good causes can leave you without enough time to do any of them properly.

Setting boundaries isn’t about being unwilling to contribute. It’s recognising that your capacity is finite, and that every commitment deserves the attention you promised to give it.

A good key account relationship shouldn’t spend all its time looking backwards.

Knowing whether a customer is happy matters. But understanding where their business is going can be considerably more valuable.

What are their growth plans? When do they set budgets? What does their investment cycle look like? Are they considering a new site, team or capability, and where could you fit into those plans?

These questions help account managers move from supplier conversations towards genuine commercial understanding.

And there’s another useful test: if you can’t access that information, are you speaking to the right person, or even targeting the right account?

For years, much of the growth conversation focused on winning customers: inbound marketing, sales processes, conversion rates, qualification and pipelines.

But there’s another part of the commercial journey receiving greater attention: what happens after someone becomes a customer?

As businesses mature and build larger customer bases, the opportunity changes. Growth isn’t only about acquiring another customer. It’s also about retaining existing ones, understanding their needs and identifying where you can create more value.

For established businesses in particular, that raises an important question: are you investing as much thought into growing customer relationships as you are into winning new ones?

Your business knows more than any one employee. The challenge is making sure that knowledge stays in the business, and gets used.

Bringing senior people together to capture how they solve customer problems can create something far more valuable than a collection of notes.

Done properly, it gives account managers and customer success teams practical expertise they can draw on when customers need it.

It also reduces the risk of vital knowledge walking out of the door when experienced people leave.

Customer success, then, isn’t simply about service. It can help turn collective experience into lasting business value.

How many of your customers actually know everything you can do for them?

It’s surprisingly common to hear: “I didn’t know you offered that.”

That represents a missed opportunity because the difficult work has already been done. You have the relationship. You’re an approved supplier. The accounts are set up. Trust has been established.

Yet businesses often concentrate so heavily on delivering the existing service that they forget to discuss everything else they could provide.

Before spending more to find new customers, look closely at the ones you already have. A simple gap analysis could reveal your most accessible growth opportunities.

Most businesses put enormous effort into winning new customers. But how much attention are you giving to the customers you already have?

In this episode, we discuss why customer health can be one of the most overlooked sources of sustainable growth.

From measuring churn and strengthening key relationships to identifying cross-sell opportunities and spotting customers at risk, we explore how a more structured approach can improve both revenue and resilience.

We also look at how CRM and AI can make customer insight easier to act on.

Before chasing another lead, it may be worth asking: how healthy are your existing customer relationships?

Some of the best business lessons don't come from your competitors. They come from exceptional customer experiences.

Whether it's a luxury hotel, a Michelin-starred restaurant or a favourite retailer, pay attention to what makes the experience memorable.

It's rarely one big gesture. More often, it's thoughtful details, anticipation and genuine care.

The real value comes when you ask how those ideas could work in your own business.

Modern technology makes it easier than ever to understand customers, solve problems before they're raised and build loyalty that goes far beyond points or discounts.
