Change starts with education, because you don’t know what you don’t know.
And when it comes to disability, chronic illness and neurodivergence, there are still a LOT of assumptions about what people can do, how they should work, what support they “really” need, and even what disability is supposed to look like.
If you’re the person on the receiving end of those assumptions, it can be exhausting:
Explaining why you need to do something differently.
Explaining that your capacity can change from one day to the next.
Explaining that needing an adjustment doesn’t mean you’re less capable.
Explaining that no, not every disability is visible.
You shouldn’t need a PowerPoint presentation ready every time you enter a new room 🤦🏼♀️ That’s why education matters.
Not so everybody becomes an expert in every condition, disability or neurotype; that’s neither realistic nor necessary.
But because the more we understand each other, the fewer gaps we fill with assumptions. And that matters in our workplaces and businesses too.
Employers, clients, service providers and business owners don’t need to have all the answers. Being willing to listen, learn and ask better questions is a pretty powerful place to start.
At Ablepreneurs®, we want disabled, chronically ill, and neurodivergent entrepreneurs, freelancers, and professionals to have greater access to community, connection, education, and opportunity, while helping create a wider world that better understands the people within it.
Because education creates understanding - Understanding creates empathy - and understanding each other better is one of the ways we start removing unnecessary barriers.
Follow Ablepreneurs® as we continue the conversation, as this is just the first in our Change Starts With... series.
