A recent fire, that killed a mum and her two young children, is thought to have started with an electric bike being charged.

The batteries used in e-scooters, e-bikes and hoverboards are safe in normal use, but are highly flammable. If overcharged or damaged they can start fires that quickly spread and are difficult to extinguish.

When charging yours remember:

⚠️ Always follow the instructions and use the manufacturer-approved charger
⚠️ Avoid charging the battery overnight
⚠️ Do not leave charging for any longer than it needs to fully charge

Is your garden safe? Child safety week is coming soon - Monday 5th to Sunday 11th June

Are you lucky enough to have a garden? Or can your child play in the garden of family or friends?

Outdoor play is a great way to burn off energy but not every garden is child friendly.

So, make sure chemicals like w**d killer and fertiliser are kept away from curious youngsters and garden tools are locked away in a shed.

With half-term approaching, the wonderful Child Accident Prevention Trust have come up with some top tips to keep everyone safe during the school break.

With half term approaching for some, are you planning to explore your local area?

Whether you’re walking, cycling or scooting, it’s a fab activity that doesn’t have to cost a thing. Plus, you can use this time to teach your children about road safety too.

⭐ Encourage small children to hold your hand and keep on the pavement out of harm's way.
⭐ Talk about what you can see and hear.
⭐ Ask questions to help them understand simple ideas like ‘fast’ and ‘slow’, as well as where the pavement ends and the road begins.
⭐ Remember, children will copy what you do, so try to avoid stepping into the road without making it obvious you’re checking it’s safe to cross first.

You'll find more road safety tips on our website, plus, some great activity sheets for children: https://capt.org.uk/csw-road-safety/

News reports of shortages and delivery problems for children’s toys this Christmas have many of us reaching for our phones to get shopping and quick!

But – if you’re searching for Black Friday toy deals – how do you know if the toys you’re buying online are dangerous toys for kids?

Let's make sure we are protecting our little one's this Christmas. 🎅🎅🎅

We expect the toys we buy to be safe. But dangerous toys sold online can seriously injure your child.

They can have loose button batteries that can be deadly, super-strong magnets that can rip holes in the belly, or long cords that can strangle.

Make sure what you buy is safe http://ow.ly/Hj0Q50GTnYJ

Safe stairs are crucial to creating safe buildings – not least as in the event of a fire they are an important means of escape.

Improving safety standards for stair design will significantly reduce the number of people needlessly dying and getting hurt.

There is already an existing tried and tested British Standard (BS 5395-1) which does just this. It considers the dimensions of the stairs; their slip resistance and the provision of handrails. It is estimated that stairs built to the British Standard in new build homes result in an estimated 60% fewer falls. Enshrining BS5395-1 into law would therefore save the NHS up to £5 million every year through accident reduction.

Compliance to BS 5395-1 is commercially viable, evidence based, and straightforward to implement. This is why we are campaigning for BS 5395-1 to be enshrined into law for new build homes from 2024
