Utility costs can sometimes hide unexpected savings opportunities.

When Currie European Transport Ltd suspected their water charges were too high, Brownlow Utilities conducted a detailed historical bill audit and water survey to investigate.

The results:

• £56,000 recovered in surface water drainage refunds
• £19,600 ongoing annual water savings
• £6,500 annual electricity infrastructure savings

By reviewing utilities holistically, the team was able to identify savings across multiple areas rather than focusing on a single bill.

The UK Government has published details of its proposed seventh carbon budget, setting out plans for an 87% reduction in emissions between 2038 and 2042.

The proposal is intended to support several key objectives, including improving energy security by reducing exposure to global fossil fuel market shocks, mitigating global warming, and delivering wider benefits for the economy, public health and the natural environment.

The announcement also highlights the continued growth of the UK's net zero economy, which now supports more than one million jobs and is expected to contribute £105 billion in gross value added (GVA) to the economy in 2025, making it the UK's fastest-growing economic sector.

Other notable developments referenced in the update include:
• March recording the highest solar deployment figures in a decade
• Electric vehicle sales reaching their highest level in 10 years

While the proposed targets remain ambitious, the announcement provides an insight into the direction of travel for UK energy, sustainability and climate policy over the coming decades.

Families and businesses will continue to reap the benefits of the clean energy transition in the coming decades.

As part of Mental Health Awareness Week, our team stepped away from their desks for a lunchtime walk to reconnect with nature and take a break from the working day.

Spending time outdoors, getting fresh air, and taking a pause from screens can have a positive impact on both mental wellbeing and productivity. The walk also gave the team an opportunity to catch up away from meetings and emails, helping everyone return to the afternoon feeling refreshed and re-focused.

In busy working environments, it can be easy to overlook the importance of taking short breaks throughout the day. Simple activities such as a lunchtime walk can encourage healthier habits, support wellbeing, and create stronger connections across teams.

This Mental Health Awareness Week, we are reflecting on the importance of creating a workplace culture where people feel connected, supported, and able to take time to recharge.

Throughout the week, our team has come together in a number of different ways outside of day-to-day work. From our monthly film club to an office games night, and even taking a moment to appreciate the wildlife just outside the office, these small moments have all helped to encourage conversation, connection, and a positive working environment.

While mental health awareness often focuses on the bigger conversations, it is also important to recognise the value of everyday experiences that help people switch off, build relationships, and enjoy time together. Creating opportunities for colleagues to connect in a relaxed and informal way can have a meaningful impact on wellbeing across the workplace.

At Brownlow Utilities, we believe a positive workplace culture is built through both professional support and the small moments that bring people together. 🌟
