This year’s RHS - Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Garden of the Year winner feels like more than a garden.

On the Edge reflects on the overlooked landscapes between town and countryside — spaces often under pressure, yet deeply important in connecting people with nature in everyday life.

Naturalistic, textural and quietly powerful, it’s a reminder that even the most ordinary landscapes can hold extraordinary value.

Beautifully considered by Sarah Eberle and the wider team behind the project.

A brilliant day at Future Countryside 2026, bringing together voices from across farming, land management, nature, climate, food, planning, tourism and rural enterprise to discuss the future of the countryside.

From debates around nature recovery and rural growth to conversations on food production, leadership and public engagement with rural places, the day highlighted both the complexity of the challenges ahead and the power of collaborative thinking.

One of the biggest takeaways was that we need to get better at telling the story of the countryside and why it matters, to ensure we are engaging and welcoming a diverse audience and building widespread support for the success of rural places.

A huge thank you to the organisers Future Countryside and hosts Raby Castle, Park and Gardens , as well as to the speakers and everyone involved in creating such thoughtful and engaging discussions throughout the day.

A brilliant Sunday morning spent outdoors with the Rural Solutions team and families at situated at 🌿

From den building and woodland crafts to campfire garlic bread and s’mores, it was lovely to spend time together in such a magical rural setting — even with a few rain showers thrown in!

A huge thank you to the Wild Explorers team for such a special morning.

A reminder of the value of stepping outside, slowing down and spending time in the landscapes that inspire so much of what we do.

📢 North Yorkshire Call for Sites reopened

North Yorkshire Council has reopened its Call for Sites for a six-week period.

📅 Opened: 11 May 2026
📅 Closes: 22 June 2026

The Council has advised that there is no guarantee the Call for Sites will be reopened again in future, so landowners, land managers and those with potential development interests are encouraged to consider whether any sites should be submitted during this window.

Call for Sites submissions are an important part of the Local Plan process, helping councils understand what land may be available and suitable to meet future needs.

If you would like to understand whether your land may have development potential, please get in touch with the Rural Solutions team.

AI is already influencing the way places and buildings are planned, designed and delivered.

In our latest article, originally published in the Yorkshire Post Property Pages, Malcolm Birks, Head of Design at Rural Solutions, reflects on the opportunities AI presents for architecture — and why human judgement, creativity and accountability remain essential.

Following our success at The RIBA Yorkshire Regional Awards this week, we’re taking a closer look at our winning project.

This contemporary rural home was the only rural project and the only private house among the five winners in the Yorkshire region. All winners will now be considered for a highly coveted RIBA National Award in recognition of their architectural excellence, to be announced on 9 July.

The house is situated in a sensitive rural setting and was delivered through the ‘exceptional country house’ clause (Paragraph 84e) of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF). Homes delivered via this planning route are required to meet exceptional architectural and environmental standards and this project represents the very best in contemporary rural design.

This project was a true team effort, as our Head of Design, Malcolm Birks reflects

“Winning this award is a fantastic outcome for this project and recognises the dedication of the whole delivery team. The scheme demonstrates how contemporary design can sit comfortably within a sensitive rural setting and with sustainability embedded into every detail. It has been a truly collaborative experience for a client who every day finds another aspect of the house and landscape to delight them."
