I'm Mel Bates - a highly experienced Executive Assistant with a passion for providing top-class support to busy professionals, with over 20 years of expertise in EA and PA roles, including 17 years specifically in the legal sector and more recently in manufacturing and Fintech, I bring a wealth of knowledge and skills to the table. I'm based in Solihull in the West Midlands, but the joy of being a virtual assistant means I can support you from anywhere! Throughout my career, I have worked for various national and international law firms as a Legal PA, PA Team Leader and EA to CEO and Chairman, which has provided a wealth of experience and allowed me to develop a diverse skill set. I have a deep understanding of the unique demands and challenges faced by business owners, exposure to a vast client base and the ability to adapt to different work environments. I'm also well-versed in handling confidential and sensitive information with the utmost discretion and I understand the importance of maintaining professionalism and integrity in all aspects of my work. I have also gained valuable experience in HR and operations, further enhancing my already diverse skill set and making me a versatile and unique option as a virtual assistant. Being a wearer of many hats is my specialism - whether it's orchestrating high-level board meetings, meticulously co-ordinating large-scale award ceremonies and conferences for up to 300 attendees, efficiently managing a professional membership portal, providing support and guidance through HR consultations or overseeing a dynamic team of 20 PAs and admins while juggling complex diary and email management! Hello October 🍂🎃

Another new month has come round at lightning speed!

October for me marks the start of autumn (and it’s my birthday month!). I love the change of season at this time of year - leaves turning orange, the crunch underfoot, crisp sunny mornings and cosy evenings with a glass of red!

As we head into the last few months of the year, it’s a good time to pause and think about what you’d still like to achieve before we welcome 2027.

✨ 4 Years of Elite Virtual Assistant Limited ✨

September has marked 4 years in business and, as cliché as it sounds, I genuinely don’t know where that time has gone! I started my business while on maternity leave with my youngest and, frankly, the realisation that he’s now 4 years old upsets me more because THAT time has gone far too quickly 🥹

When I started my business, I could never have imagined where it would lead. The last 18 months in particular have brought some of the biggest changes. I’ve transitioned from Elite EA into Elite Virtual Assistant Limited, grown in confidence as a business owner and continued building a business I’m incredibly proud of.

There have been some pretty special moments along the way too ✨
Launching the Midlands VA Conference with PA Forum 3 years ago, public speaking, being named a finalist in this year’s UK VA Awards “Outstanding VA” category and, of course, being named "Solo VA of the Year 2025" (on my birthday too!). I'll never forget that moment 🏆

Another milestone I’m incredibly proud of is maintaining a full client quota for 3 years, with a client base I absolutely LOVE working with 💛 Being trusted to support businesses as they grow, evolve and flourish is one of the greatest privileges of what I do.

Of course, it hasn’t all been easy... There's been challenges, lessons and plenty of moments where I’ve questioned whether I can do it and had to back myself more than ever before BUT there's also been celebrations, opportunities, fun, laughter, a new confidence and some brilliant people coming into my life along the way. And those things have made the harder moments worth it!

So I’m taking a moment to celebrate 4 years of Elite Virtual Assistant and say a HUGE thank you to every client, collaborator, cheerleader and supporter who has been part of the journey so far 💛 THANK YOU!

It’s been a whirlwind but I couldn’t be more excited about what comes next...

I'm a FINALIST!

I'm so proud to share that I've been announced as a finalist in the Outstanding VA of the Year category at the UK VA Awards 2026 🎉

After winning Solo VA of the Year in 2025, which is easily the highlight of my business journey so far, I wasn't sure whether to enter this year but I'm so glad I pushed myself and got on with it (albeit leaving it until deadline day...!) as it helped me reflect on everything I've achieved another year on ♥️🙌

A huge thanks to Amanda Johnson and the judges for their time and congratulations to my incredible fellow 2026 finalists!

Whatever the result come 16th October, it's been another amazing year for Elite Virtual Assistant Limited!

Hello, August ☀️

This month will be a little different to usual for me as I take some time away with my family to switch off and make memories ❤️

The pace of life and business through August will be a bit slower but my clients won't be left to completely fend for themselves 😉 I'll still be making sure key priorities are taken care of because running a business shouldn't mean never taking a break.

Here's to a month of balance and boundaries.

The summer holidays have started… and childcare didn’t quite go as planned today!

So I’ve worked this morning with the kids at home (tag teaming with my hubby) and now we’re in the park with the kids, a picnic and bikes.

This is a real plus for me being a business owner. The change in plans has meant we’re taking a couple of hours out to spend with the kids. A simple thing but a treat all the same.

As a busy Founder, CEO or business owner - how are you managing with the school holidays? Have you realised that a Virtual Assistant could be the answer to give you more time or better flexibility…

I’m away for the May half term. After a crazy busy first 6 months of the year, I’m taking a break from work and life/family admin 🙌 I’ll be spending the next few days having quality time with my beautiful (if not sometimes drives me mad 😂) family up in sunny Yorkshire ❤️☀️🍸
