I'm Mel Bates - a highly experienced Executive Assistant with a passion for providing top-class support to busy professionals, with over 20 years of expertise in EA and PA roles, including 17 years specifically in the legal sector and more recently in manufacturing and Fintech, I bring a wealth of knowledge and skills to the table. I'm based in Solihull in the West Midlands, but the joy of being a

Throughout my career, I have worked for various national and international law firms as a Legal PA, PA Team Leader and EA to CEO and Chairman, which has provided a wealth of experience and allowed me to develop a diverse skill set. I have a deep understanding of the unique demands and challenges faced by business owners, exposure to a vast client base and the ability to adapt to different work environments. I'm also well-versed in handling confidential and sensitive information with the utmost discretion and I understand the importance of maintaining professionalism and integrity in all aspects of my work. I have also gained valuable experience in HR and operations, further enhancing my already diverse skill set and making me a versatile and unique option as a virtual assistant. Being a wearer of many hats is my specialism - whether it's orchestrating high-level board meetings, meticulously co-ordinating large-scale award ceremonies and conferences for up to 300 attendees, efficiently managing a professional membership portal, providing support and guidance through HR consultations or overseeing a dynamic team of 20 PAs and admins while juggling complex diary and email management! Hello, August ☀️

This month will be a little different to usual for me as I take some time away with my family to switch off and make memories ❤️

The pace of life and business through August will be a bit slower but my clients won't be left to completely fend for themselves 😉 I'll still be making sure key priorities are taken care of because running a business shouldn't mean never taking a break.

Here's to a month of balance and boundaries.

The summer holidays have started… and childcare didn’t quite go as planned today!

So I’ve worked this morning with the kids at home (tag teaming with my hubby) and now we’re in the park with the kids, a picnic and bikes.

This is a real plus for me being a business owner. The change in plans has meant we’re taking a couple of hours out to spend with the kids. A simple thing but a treat all the same.

As a busy Founder, CEO or business owner - how are you managing with the school holidays? Have you realised that a Virtual Assistant could be the answer to give you more time or better flexibility…

Today feels like the perfect reminder that behind the term “Virtual Assistant” are real people, with real stories.

This photo was taken at the UK VA Awards 2025 - a moment I’ll always be incredibly proud of after winning Solo VA of the Year BUT what makes this photo even more special to me is the group of people I’m stood with.

Each of us built our businesses for completely different reasons.
Each of us has our own style, strengths, services, passions and ways of working.
Each of us has created something on our own terms.
And that’s the part people don’t always see.

“VA” can sound like a generic title from the outside but this industry is anything but generic!

Some VAs are strategists.
Some are organisers.
Some are creatives, project managers, operations experts, social media managers, inbox magicians, tech wizards or trusted right hands behind growing businesses.

No two businesses look the same. No two stories are the same.

And that’s exactly what makes this community so special ✨

So today, on International Virtual Assistants Day, here’s to every VA building something meaningful in their own way.
