👥 If something's wrong, will the team always tell you?

It's easy to assume that if there's a problem, someone will speak up. But not everyone feels comfortable raising concerns, and sometimes small frustrations can build quietly over time. 💭

That's why regular conversations matter.

Ask the team how things are going, what's working well and what could be better. And most importantly, listen to the answer. 👂💚

It doesn't always need to be a formal meeting, either. Some of the most valuable conversations can happen over a cup of tea, in the yard or during an ordinary working day. ☕🚜

🌱 Retention starts long before somebody resigns.

When a valued employee hands in their notice, it's tempting to ask:

💬 "What can we do to persuade you to stay?"

But by then, the real decision may have been made months earlier.

Perhaps the more useful question is one we should be asking our people regularly:

💭 "What would make this somewhere you'd still want to be working in three years' time?"

If agriculture is serious about tackling its people shortage, recruitment is only half the answer. 🌾

We need to become much better at keeping the good people we already have.

Because the best recruitment strategy might just be creating a farm that good people don't want to leave. 👥💚

Not a day when you still answered every call or checked WhatsApp. A genuine break 📵

Farming will always have busy periods; harvest, calving, and lambing can mean long days. 🚜 But working hard for a period is very different from working exhausted indefinitely.

🌱 Recovery is part of performance!

As farm owners and managers, we need to lead by example. Take holidays, switch off and encourage your team to do the same, particularly after demanding periods. 💚

Taking a break isn't a lack of commitment. Creating a farm that can function without you for a few days might actually be a sign of stronger leadership 👥
