Happy Friday!

Further to my recent post on purpose and the importance of WHY, I have been reflecting this week on the importance of your clients and colleagues understanding HOW you work and how you are to work with.

I received two client recommendations this week and some of the words they used to describe me hit home….

*Knowledgeable
*Organised
*Exceptionally easy to work with
*Enthusiastic
*Professional
*Committed
*Strategic
*Passionate
*Positive

Lisa Steward captured this visual for me just under a year ago now which captures feedback from my clients on HOW I am to work with.

It’s a great exercise to get both colleagues and clients to describe how you are to work with – it will be one of the core reasons clients choose you and it will tell you what colleagues feel and think about you too.

Here are 5 key questions that can help you do this to understand HOW you impact others

1. What is it like to work with me on a day-to-day basis?
2. Describe my core attributes
3. Which of my attributes would you like to see more of and why?
4. When I am at my best, how am I to work with?
5. Which 10 words would you use to describe how it feels to work with me?

It’s also a great opportunity to gain feedback on areas to develop and improve.
Annabel Gray and Lisa Johnson thank you for your kind words this week - it’s such a pleasure to know you both and work with you.

Happy Friday!

A month into year eleven and I thought I’d share this visual which summarises Arch inspire’s solutions and WHY people work with me. This week I have been designing an exciting new programme and fulfilling one of my key goals of ‘Collaboration with brilliant coaches and consultants’. We have been challenging ourselves heavily on the WHY of the programme, its’ purpose, objectives, required outcomes and success measures.

I am a big fan of Simon Sinek, his book ‘Start with Why’ is a firm favourite of mine. I’m also working with a coach on this very topic (my WHY for Arch inspire) as I consider my strategy and plan for the next 10 years.

We can often find it hard to communicate our WHY with conviction and confidence. It’s a key area I work on with many clients.

So why do people work with me and Arch inspire?

*I have over 20 years of Leadership experience and expertise
*I have built, led, managed and coached teams for over 10 years so I ‘get it’
*I have high energy
*I am an ‘empathetic challenger’ with a values driven approach
*I am structured, thoughtful, practical and results focused
*I work at all levels in organisations (strategic, tactical, operational)
*I listen to understand first and foremost
*I question with purpose and intent
*I cut through the noise to find the key issues and opportunities
*I have high integrity - if I cannot help with something I will refer and recommend someone else/something that will help and I’m always open to learning
*I bring fun and humour
*I am certified and qualified to do what I do
*I love to learn
*I’m absolutely passionate about helping individuals, teams and businesses be the best they can be
*I care deeply about my work

Take 10 mins today and ask yourself this question - Why do people work with me and what difference do I make?

If you struggle to answer this question, get in touch and I’d be happy to share some tools and techniques that can help develop your confidence, conviction and the articulation of your WHY.

Thank you to Lisa Steward for your on-going design expertise too.

Have a super weekend ahead!

Happy Friday!

This picture was taken last week, when as a family we embarked on a hot air balloon adventure. The shadow of the balloon is us over the beautiful Warwickshire countryside!  I’ve thought a lot about the experience since and also about perspective.

Much of the time we can feel immersed in the
day-to-day - running from task to task, solving problems, making decisions, juggling work and life but our growth and learning often comes from changing perspectives, stepping back, pausing, reflecting and focusing ON as opposed to IN.

Imagine stepping into a hot air balloon, as you rise above the landscape, things that may have weighed heavily on your mind as you started or ended your day can start to fit into a bigger picture. You can see the paths, patterns, possibilities and opportunities that weren’t visible from the ground where you were immersed in overload, issues, obstacles and decisions.

When we were up in the air the only sound I could hear were the lambs, it was one of the most beautiful and most present experiences I have ever had.  It helped me to truly appreciate our beautiful planet and to feel grateful for all we have.  It has also helped me to gain perspective on so many things since.

Today I encourage you to lift yourself above the day-to-day doing, if only for 10 minutes and ask yourself:

✔️What is really important?
✔️Where am I making progress?
✔️What am I missing because I’m too close to it?

A little altitude can afford a lot of clarity!

Huge thanks to Phil’s wonderful colleagues and friends at Quilter Cheviot for this amazing experience. 💚

Have a super weekend ahead.

My twin boys are Villa supporters and we are as a family too. I will never, ever forget how happy and excited the boys were with their friends two weeks ago watching their team lift the Europa League trophy. They were singing, dancing and smiling from ear to ear.

It made me think about how sport really does bring people together and also how fortunate I am to have found the Midlands 20 years ago. Listening to Unai Emery address the crowds at the subsequent victory parade cemented for me, what a wonderful coach and leader he is. In every single press interview he thanks the fans first and foremost. He’s committed to always learning and always improving.

I love this quote of his.....

“For me, whether we win or lose, every match is giving me a lot of information about how to improve”.

Sport brings people together, my children are learning so much from it (the highs, the lows, the resilience, the respect, the team spirit). I know these lessons will help them in life.

Thank you for reading this - especially if you’re not a Villan! 💜

Happy Friday!

Those who have worked with me and know me well, will know I often talk about ‘Hilltops’ in my work.

A hilltop symbolises an individuals....

🗻Position or perspective
🗻Opinions
🗻Ideas
🗻Achievements
🗻Personal boundaries
🗻Experiences
🗻Own journey

Respecting and understanding others’ hilltops means you are able to…

✔️Listen to and acknowledge their opinions (you don’t have to agree with them)
✔️Acknowledge their experiences and achievements
✔️Listen to their point of view
✔️Avoid undermining or dominating
✔️Avoid imposing your views/ideas without listening and acknowledging theirs (it’s of course ok to challenge as appropriate BUT when you have done the above).

Often we are too quick to share or impose our own views, opinions and ideas without giving the other person the chance to share theirs. Sometimes we do this vocally or we do this inside ourselves meaning we are not listening or respecting the other person. I see this a lot in business and also in life generally!

Asking about someones’ holiday and then five seconds later telling them about your experience when you went there

Asking for someones’ views and ideas for a project and then instantly dismissing them or projecting your own too quickly

Acknowledging someone’s achievements but then quickly sharing yours to compare

Here’s how you can develop your ability to respect others hilltops...

💡Listen to understand not to just reply
💡Separate the person from the opinion
💡Ask curious and clarifying questions
💡Show interested in others’ experiences
💡Avoid comparison
💡Respect the boundaries of others
💡Disagree respectfully and assertively
💡Celebrate others without comparison
💡Avoid interrupting
💡Respect that different experiences shape beliefs
💡Be open to changing your mind
💡Use calm and respectful language during disagreements
💡Know when to pause
💡Always stay curious

HAPPY FRIDAY & HAPPY 10TH BIRTHDAY ARCH INSPIRE!

Happy 60th Birthday to my wonderful husband Philip Hurdman today....

Happy 100th Birthday to David Attenborough and also Up the Villa!

As I reflect on 10 years of Arch inspire, it feels like yesterday that I sat in the Gouman Tower Hotel in London with Lou Macari who has been my trusted mentor for over 10 years now.  We discussed potential names for my new business, defined what I wanted my business to be known for and created the concept of the 5C’s!  I’m eternally grateful to both Lou and Peter Hill, my brilliant mentors for encouraging me, challenging me, pushing me and believing in me for over a decade!

For 10 years I’ve been coaching, consulting, facilitating, mentoring and training the most wonderful individuals, teams and organisations.  Hundreds of clients have completed the 5C’s and 3C’s coaching programmes and I have long standing relationships with many clients that span 10 years now.  Many clients have experienced Arch inspire’s leadership and skills development programmes or worked with me as a board or leadership team through transformational change.  I’ve had the pleasure of working with many SME business owners, directors and leadership teams across professional services, engineering, charity, education, design, marketing sectors to name a few.

Starting Arch inspire was the best career decision I ever made and one of the best life decisions too. I’m eternally grateful to so many people who have supported me. I can’t name you all here but you know who you are. Over 10 years, I’ve continually developed my skills, learnt from the best, made great decisions and learnt from poor decisions, ran 3 marathons, raised 15k for charities close to my heart, qualified as a NLP Business and Master Practitioner, had my own NLP model published by the ANLP and qualified as a EQ-i DISC and MBTI II practitioner. I’ve also been challenged by the pandemic and many economic and political uncertainties.  I get to do what I love every single day - it is a privilege.  I’m so excited this year to be collaborating and working closely with great coaches and consultants too. Thank you to you all 💚

Happy Friday!

Those who know me and work with me will know my passion for all things VALUES.

On Wednesday I had the pleasure of working with the brilliant Lisa Johnson to lead a session on ‘The Power of our Values’ with a fabulous group of professionals in finance, investment and law.  We focused of the following:

💡Identifying our own values
💡Understanding how our core values drive our behaviour, actions and motivations
💡Learning how we can use our values to leverage the value we bring to others
💡Identifying how we can leverage our values in key relationships
💡Exploring how we can align our core values with our professional and personal goals and ambitions

Every time I work on values with clients or deliver group/team sessions in this area I feel even more in touch with my own values of empathy, integrity, honesty and responsibility.

The session helped the group to explore, identify and connect with their own core values, to identify how they show up in their work and in their life, to spot the triggers when something/someone cuts across their values and their choice of how to respond/react (considering hilltops 🗻) and crucially how their values help them to fulfil their purpose and achieve their ambitions.

We also discussed the importance of company values living and breathing and being embedded in everything the company sets out to do both externally and internally.

Three key questions I posed which resonated for the group were....

❓What have I done today that has demonstrated my core values in action?
❓How can I ‘pause before pleasing’ to ensure I stand by my values?
❓How do I specifically share and demonstrate my core values (and company values) with my clients and colleagues?

Feel free to use these questions and please reach out if you would like our complimentary guide to help you explore your own core values or if you’d like to chat with me on how to identify your core values.

Thank you Lisa Johnson for asking me to lead this session and for trusting me. You have created a fantastic group here Lisa and I can’t wait to hear more about how you work, learn, share and support each other moving forwards.

Happy Friday!

Further to my blog last week on the importance of Leaders switching off and taking time out, here are my top 5 tips to help Leaders step away and achieve this.

💡Remove temptations and distractions – log out of work apps and e-mails, turn off notifications, (as a rule I have no notification pop ups for emails, what’s apps or any other apps – I learnt this from reading Nir Eyal’s book - Indistractable). It was transformational for me personally and broke a decade plus long habit I had of watching the blackberry ‘red-light’ or hearing the iPhone buzz.

💡Replace – fill the space you have with something specific that will absorb you – exercise, social time, an interest – this decreases the risk of drifting back to work and keeps you focused on something for you.

💡Reflect on how you end each working day – spend 10 minutes reflecting on what you achieved - I call this ‘3 key wins’ and identify the key priorities for the next working day - ‘3 key actions’.  Capture these so you remove them from your head and distil them into your calendar/to do list/task list.

💡Realise Rome wasn’t built in a day and reframe if required  – if switching off feels too unnatural to start, begin with something smaller – protect one evening a week for example and commit to it. Less is more in the early days and when you start to see the benefits it will drive you to do more.

💡Role-model the boundaries that you put in place for others (and yourself) – many Leaders want their teams to achieve balance and set healthy boundaries.  As the Leader you have the responsibility to do this – you set the tone and the example.

If you want to find out more about how I work with individuals, teams and organisations to help them to achieve balance both personally and professionally, please get in touch.  I’d love to chat with you.

I love this image by Liz Fosslien - a brilliant metaphor - we often convince ourselves we are indispensable. The reality is quite different when we challenge ourselves to change.

Have a super weekend ahead!

Happy Friday!

We were fortunate to spend last week in beautiful sunny Cornwall. I’ve been reflecting this week on the importance of switching off as a leader.  For years in my corporate career I would be constantly on my phone whilst away from work.  I remember one holiday where I had to lock my blackberry in the safe just to stop myself looking at it. I wasn’t aware at the time how unhealthy this was.

Switching off isn’t a luxury it’s a necessity for us all. There is still a lingering belief among leaders that always being “on” is a sign of commitment and strength. In reality, it signals the opposite; a system too dependent on one person to function effectively and a lack of trust in others.

A recent leadership session I facilitated highlighted this dependency on leaders and business owners. When leaders don’t switch off they deny their teams the opportunity to work independently and to grow. This creates real risks for the business and its clients. Time away becomes diluted - neither productive work nor proper rest serves no-one.

True rest is where your mind is not preoccupied, it allows your brain to reset. Cognitive science shows that stepping away from complex problems often leads to better solutions and clearer sharper decisions . It’s why your best ideas often appear on a walk, not necessily in a meeting.

Being outdoors, especially in unfamiliar surroundings, fresh air, natural light, and movement all play a role in reducing stress hormones and improving your mood.
There is also psychological shift that happens when you physically remove yourself from your usual environment. Distance creates perspective, problems that felt urgent and heavy can suddenly seem manageable and decisions that felt complex become clearer.

Whether it’s walking along a coastline, hiking through countryside, or simply sitting outside in fresh air without distraction, these moments create mental openness - something we often lack in the intensity of daily work.
