In today's blog post we’re going to talk about the processing of the fibre we spin before it comes to the mill. Once upon a time, when our mill was smaller and mostly just staffed by John, we took our scoured wool and then did all of the (non-dyeing) processing ourselves.

Eventually, the amount of fibre we were processing became too much for us to do everything in house (we now scour 3 tonnes of Devonia at a time!) so John opted to start using a specialist company up in Bradford, , and over time we moved all our fibre production to them so we could concentrate on colour blending and spinning – what we do best!

We just knew we had to include a firm favourite of ours in the new Appledore samples we've had knit up in our new shades: The Braeburn Mitts by ! There’s nothing better on a chilly winter’s day than slipping your hands into a pair of cosy handmade mitts. And when the mitts in question are as glorious as the Braeburn Mitts, it’s even more of a pleasure!

The Braeburn Mitts are just a joy – to make and wear. With their intuitive colourwork design, resembling little trees or fruit, they knit up in a flash! They also fit like a dream with ribbed cuffs and different customisation options.

We were overjoyed that Amy chose our Appledore DK to make these snuggly mitts and just had to have a couple pairs knit up in some of our new shades. Our lovely sample knitter Katie created a version in Old Fred, Betley Bee Bush and Sugar Bush. We have created some kits in a few other colour combos that we think would look fabulous!

Kits for the Braeburn Mitts and the three other new samples are hitting the shop shelves on Friday, October 23.

We've loved ' Ship Shape Cardigan for years and are delighted to have another sample of this super wearable stripey cardi!

If you ask us, you just can’t beat a simple cardigan when it comes to layering and versatility, and this little beauty combines simple lines and straightforward shaping, with fun stripes to express your personality! The Ship Shape Cardigan is worked seamlessly from the top down, beginning with the 2 shoulder gussets, and it’s these little details that really add some pizazz to the design.

Heidi designed this cardi in our workhorse Appledore DK, and our lovely sample knitter Amanda whipped up a version in Winter Pomeroy (one of our new blues) and Billy Down Pippin. We have created some kits in a few other colour combos that we think will look absolutely cracking!

We adore the Lace weight of our Appledore range, and when we saw 's Haruno Shawl, we knew we'd found the perfect pattern for it.

The Haruno Shawl is worked sideways, i.e. you start at the tip and increase on the right hand side until you've arrived at the final number of stitches. It combines a beautiful geometric lace pattern with twisted and textured stitches inspired by spring flowers and the wind. For a bit of extra pizzazz, add a tassel to the cast on edge!

Our sample was kindly knit by Abi, one of our sample knitters, and we used Cornish Gilliflower in Appledore Lace for this sample. We think this shawl would look good in all shades of the rainbow, so we've selected rather a lot of colours for you to choose from for the kit!

Kits for the Willow Pullover (and three more patterns) in our new Appledore colours will be launching in just a few days, on Friday, October 23.

And we are live with our delightful "Spot Mr. Smoke 2" jigsaw puzzle! 🥳

This gorgeous illustration was created by none other than the fabulous .green. It first appeared in The Annual (issue one) and we couldn't resist putting it into jigsaw puzzle form for some cosy puzzle time this autumn! "Spot Mr. Smoke 2" is the second half of the illustration - the first half is also available as a jigsaw, and you can get a bundle of the two together as well.

The fabulous has a new pattern out today, and it's a stunning one! The Boughline Pullover is a relaxed raglan sweater with a beautiful accent cable running down the centre line. The cosy, folded neckline and deep ribbing make this the perfect wardrobe staple for autumn, no matter whether you're running out the door to pick up the kids or are taking a long, leisurely walk through the forest.

Meiju has used our Knit by Numbers DK to design this pattern, and we couldn't resist - we just had to put together kits for it in a few of our curren favourite Knit by Numbers shades! They're available now in our webshop.

With the arrival of our 18 brand new Appledore shades, we jumped at the chance to have some of them knit up in beautiful new samples!

We fell hard for the beautiful, unusual basketweave texture of .gaughan.knits Willow Pullover and are thrilled to bits with the final sample. The perfect everyday-but-just-a-bit-special jumper if you ask us!

The Willow Pullover has a relaxed, comfortable fit and a simple drop shoulder construction that lets the basketweave stitch pattern shine. It's knitted bottom up so you can get used to the stitch pattern before working the decreases and short rows in pattern that shape the armhole and neck. We love the folded neckline and deep ribbing at the hem and cuffs for extra cosiness!

Our sample was kindly knit by Gillian, one of our sample knitters, and we used Forsyth's Serpent in Appledore DK for this sample. We kind of want one in every shade of Appledore in our wardrobe now, so we've selected a rather large number of colour options for the kit!

We'll be launching kits for the Willow Pullover (and three more patterns) in our new Appledore colours in just a few days, on Friday, October 23.
