Maintaining your chimney is an important aspect of having a wood-burner or open fire.
Sweeping makes sure:
There is a clear and safe passage for gases caused by the burning process, which are combustible, thus reducing the likelihood of the chimney catching fire.
Objects such as nests, cobwebs and loose brickwork, which could obstruct the chimney, are also removed.

Burning the wrong fuels at home, such as wet wood or some types of coal, releases harmful smoke into the air which, when mixed with other emissions in your chimney, can affect your health.

Another image from the incident in Bicester. A slight smell of burning and the actuation of a carbon monoxide detector alerted the occupiers to this fire smouldering unseen in the cavity behind the modern fireplace. They did exactly the right thing in immediately calling the fire service, and staying outside the property. Bicester Fire Station had to remove the large fireplace and plasterboard to access and extinguish the fire. www.365alive.co.uk/cms/content/home
